Only one of ours would betray us, the rest would be overjoyed at being reunited. The baby doesn't even know her real name, she only responds to "Da baybee!" That's our fault, but always good to have a reserve trick up our sleeves.

I always thought microchips would allow you to track your dog if she was lost, but realized recently that they were only used for identification.

So they are really no more helpful than having your dog wear a collar with her license tags.

Tags can be removed or lost, but microchips, while removable, are not always known. So, if someone steals a pet, the tags will be removed, but if s/he takes the animal to a vet, it will be scanned. If the pet runs away and is picked up, tags or not, they will be scanned by reputable places.

I will say, from experience, it is good to have your pets scanned when you take them in for their yearly checkup because chips can move or even be expelled. It would be nice to have a GPS option, though.

And it would be quite large as what you are wanting is something that would receive the locations from the GPS system and then transmit that location to you. Large companies have these systems in their vehicles and it is common for batteries to be to weak to start the truck after a 3 day weekend.

The chips are basically a RFID tag like the anti theft devices in clothes, DVDs and whatever. The scanner transmits a signal which is reflected back with the code in the tag.

All of mine are chipped. They don't wear collars unless being walked.

We picked up a Newfie and a boxer pup walking along a 4 lane hiway. No house in sight.

Took them Immediately to our vet to check for a chip. Nothing!

Called the pound, no reports of lost dogs. Called the newspaper and they ran a blurp, finally found the owner. The collar must have been pulled off in the escape.

A chip would have been so much easier.

It seems like at first she can't believe her senses and her human is right in front of her. Then she just seems to know all is right in her world again and she's back in place in it.

This is so precious, dogs are so sentient. My own dog mystifies me every day. I love dogs so much.

This is also why we need to microchip our pets. This sweet girl came home because of it.
