Scruffy after his rescue:
It was two weeks before Easter when I got a phone call from a police officer concerning yet another abandoned dog. Ive seen this poor guy roaming the streets now for the past several nights while on patrol. Hes old; hes starving; and he looks extremely sad and forlorn. Can you help me rescue him?
On this police officers next day off, she and I headed out to the area this old homeless canine was roaming. We drove around the area for at least an hour, and we couldnt find him anywhere. Maybe he only wanders around at night in search of food, she finally said.
Postal employees can often help identify which animals in the neighborhood are residents and which may be homeless.
We spotted a postal worker delivering mail, and we asked her if she had seen this old street waif. I havent seen him today, but that dog is breaking my heart. Hes been wandering around this neighborhood for weeks now, and he really looks pathetic. Ive called Animal Control several times, but I still see him around here just about every day digging through the trash.

(57,093 posts)ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) An Adams County man is in shock after he says deputies shot and killed his dog.
Jeff Fisher said deputies went to his house by mistake. He said when they forced their way through the door his dog Ziggy ran outside and an Adams County Sheriffs deputy shot and killed him.
(He went to the door) to see who it was and the police officer shot him three times, Fisher said. They killed my dog for no reason.
Fisher said Ziggy was his best friend and cant believe hes gone.

(57,093 posts)Cop shoots kittens infront of screaming children.
Jun 20 2013 09:44 PM
An Ohio policeman shot to death a litter of kittens on Wednesday, telling a group of screaming children that the animals would be going to kitty heaven. But instead of firing the officer, the local police department cleared him of any wrongdoing.
Humane Officer Barry Accorti was responding to a report of a litter of feral cats that were located in the woodpile of a home in North Ridgeville on June 10. The resident who made the call said the cats were bringing fleas to the home and leaving dead wildlife in her backyard. Twenty minutes after the call was made, the officer arrived at the scene. After spotting the five kittens, he told the residents distressed children that the cats would be going to heaven. Shortly thereafter, he took a gun from his vehicle and shot the animals to death.
He informed [the resident] that shelters were full and that these cats would be going to kitty heaven, Ohio SPCA Director Teresa Landon told the Cleveland Sun News. She assumed he would be trapping them or something and taking them to a shelter and they would be humanely euthanized if they were not adopted.
Initially, the woman who made the call assumed that the gun was a tranquilizer. But to her surprise, the 8-to-10 week-old kittens were shot dead, just 15 feet from the back door to her house.
She was very distraught when this happened, Landon said. He started shooting them right in front of her. Her children were upstairs in view of the windows. They started screaming and crying because they heard the gunshots. They started screaming, Mommy, hes killing the kittens.
The homeowners four children are all between the ages of 5 months and 7 years.
Landon told the Sun News that the incident is heartbreaking and inexcusable, and that a humane officer should never resort to using a weapon unless the animal is in severe pain or attacking the officer.
Landon said that Accorti should be fired and charged with animal cruelty. But instead, Police Chief Mike Freeman cleared the officer of any wrongdoings and concluded that his actions were appropriate.
After visiting the scene, talking with the responding officer and re-interviewing the complainant, I have decided his actions were appropriate and have decided not to impose any disciplinary measures for the incident, Freeman wrote in a press release, describing the cats as having been euthanized. He also stated that research and animal organizations perceive shooting as a humane form of euthanasia. But Landon still believes the officer should be prosecuted
The kittens were just sitting there, she told The Morning Journal. They didnt have to die. They were only 10 months old at most and they still could have been socialized.

(1,110 posts)who shot those dogs. In fact, based on the story, it sounds as if she wouldn't be one who would ever condone needlessly shooting an animal. What the poster above is doing is equivalent to someone posting story after story of nazi atrocities in a story discussing the positive things that John Rabe did.

(57,093 posts)bad actions. One rescue doesn't make up for the bigger pile of abuse they heap daily. Buffing badges doesn't redeem any bad actions at all.

A 14 year old boy in Battle Creek, Michigan is the latest victim of a gunshot inflicted by a police officer.
His crime? Carrying a toy gun that looked like a large caliber handgun.
Nick King was walking up the street on Saturday afternoon when an observer called 911 to report a man with a gun outside a convenience store.
officers were called at 11:57 a.m. for a man with gun. The caller told a 911 dispatcher a white man was walking on Upton Avenue near Washington Avenue with a woman and was carrying a gun.
Officers arrived in the area at 12:01 p.m. and reported the male was running through some bushes toward the Drive Thru Party Factory at 250 S. Washington Ave. near Grove Street and was carrying what appeared to be handgun.
The male entered the store but then came out and was crouching near the drive-through area of the store.
The officer arrived, saw the person, and called for him to show his hands. Saylor said the investigation thus far shows that the teen produced what appeared to be a large-caliber handgun from his clothing.
The officer fired a single shot and the teen dropped the gun and ran. Officers found him a short distance away and called for an ambulance. (source)

A female friend was present at the time of the shooting.
Shannon Cortes was there with her friend Nicholas when he was shot. She said he raised his hands when the officer told him to.
But he only went half way, she told 24 Hour News 8.
She said he did not have the weapon in his hand at the time.
His hand was completely clear, she said. (source)

(1,110 posts)This police woman behaved in a way we should want everyone to behave. Individuals should be praised (or at least not diminished) whenever they do good deeds, regardless of what others in their profession may have done. This shows the police woman and the postal workers who work that community everyday tried to do good. In this case the police officer did a bit more than just call it into animal control.
I'm with you, I think many police departments and officers are out of touch with what they are supposed to be doing...but I just don't see how it is relevant to what this woman did on her day off. Is it only relevant because she's a cop who noticed the dog while she was working?

fasttense
(17,301 posts)Anywhere between 1 to 4 years old. I have found that they are so grateful that they are the most well behaved creatures ever. I like puppies and they are so cute but they have that chewing stage, housebreaking and other training just so they can be lived with. The older dogs are usually past the chewing and destructive stage and most are housebroken. I have found that the older rescue dogs are more easily trained. Maybe it's me. I'm old and just don't have the energy to keep up with a puppy.
But I certainly can see the appeal of puppies. They are entertaining and adorable. Good luck in your hunt for a pup. I'm sure the best dog ever is just waiting for you to pick him/her out.

(16,109 posts)Do I trust cops? Not really.
Do I think they are all wonderful? Not by a long shot.
Do I think this story is nice? Yep.
Does it make me think all cops are good guys? No.
This one person, who happens to be a police officer, did a wonderful thing for this dog and, according to the article, has a bunch of other rescue dogs. We should be happy that it happened this way.
One good thing doesn't erase all the bad, but all the bad doesn't negate a kind act either.

(57,093 posts)I hold you in high esteem. I don't expect and shouldn't expect you to change a word. I agree with you: Rescuing animals is a very good and important thing. I wish you nothing but the best. I am not disputing your opinion in any way shape or form. I am underlining how unusual it is that a cop does something right in relation to others pets and children.

(36,926 posts)I do believe we all know about the atrocities police commit. I'm sure I have commented in an outraged manner on most of those posts you link. But just like not all Catholic priests are pedophiles, although way too many are, not every police officer is an out of control animal killer.

Gawd knows there have been enough abusive parents over the course of time... I would posit there have been more of them by an order of magnitude than abusive LEOs. Off limits to post an act of compassion perpetrated by a parent?

(16,109 posts)But, it doesn't negate that this was a nice story.
I guess I don't get the knee jerk reactions, both positive and negative to anything that mentions a cop. They are neither angels nor demons and sometimes a story about a dog is just a story about a dog, nothing more, nothing less.
I think the only reason that it matters that the rescuer was a cop was the way she found out about the dog.
