Attempted Murder Charges Filed Against Mom Who Drove Kids Into Ocean
By Jim Seida
The woman who drove her minivan into the Atlantic Ocean, endangering her three children until rescuers charged into the water to pull them out, has been charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder, authorities in Florida said Friday.
The woman, Ebony Wilkerson, 32, was also charged with three counts of aggravated child abuse, Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said.
As she steered into heavy surf, investigators said, she locked the doors of the minivan, rolled up the windows and told the children to close their eyes and go to sleep.
Youre supposed to protect your children at all costs, the sheriff said. Youre not supposed to be trying to kill your children.

(149,622 posts)She is obviously troubled, and I hope she'll get the help she needs.
And I hope the kids go into a more loving home.

(13,466 posts)Trying to get help for her because she was having a mental health issue. I have been in her sister's shoes with two family members and it is extremely difficult to get our current mental health system to do A DAMN THING, from my experience.
That is what always pisses me off in these stories, that people need help, someone tries to get them help and can't. This almost ended in a van load of death in this instance. We really don't have a mental health system, we have completely separate and sporadic offerings of mental health services, if you can meet all kinds of exact criteria (not always just financial, you can have insurance/means to pay and STILL get shit for help) at exactly the right time, perhaps under the correct phase of the moon..... For a first world country, we're laughable where mental health is concerned.
