A few years back, BACKPACKS became a trendy thing in the City by the Bay. Everyone had them from young kids to Seniors. I have bought several back than and still use them. I think they are great for hauling around my lap top or for just getting stuff at the store. So I am curious about the rest of the country... ARE backpacks popular where you live, and if so...do you own one?

(11,785 posts)sewn to it. Most people wear it with the pouch on your back, just above your fanny, hence the name.

(42,239 posts)In the UK it would somewhere else round the front.

(11,785 posts)I've used them at amusement parks that way. It's somewhere to stash my glasses during rides.

(30,884 posts)That's how it got its name. There are also waist packs designed to be worn as in this picture but I think this woman is wearing a fanny pack backwards --- that's why it's drooping. Her butt is supposed to be supporting the weight. Waist packs tend to be smaller.
To be fair though, a lot of people wear fanny packs this way for easy access and a little more security.
Small backpacks have been in fashion for decades in Northeastern cities, even for people beyond college age. Always saw them on mass transit.
LeftyMom
(49,212 posts)In the US fanny means buttocks. A fanny pack is a zippered pouch attached to a belt, like outdoorsy people or badly dressed tourists might wear.

(2,097 posts)One more a book bag, one a day pack. The larger (book bag) often goes to the grocery store with me if I have to sherpa heavy items home (I live in a city and do my shopping on foot). The smaller goes with us on vacations and holds our supplies (guide books, medicines, etc) when we're out touring for the day.
I used to use one to commute, too, but it's awkward in a crowded bus (especially since I'm not a small guy); for that I prefer a messenger bag, which is more easily repositioned (back or hip while standing, front while sitting) and easier to take on/off in a suit and overcoat. (I gave up on briefcases a while back for ergonomic reasons.)

(31,828 posts)And I don't recall anyone other than students of all ages walking around with them. My company issues rolling cases for our laptops (better on your back, neck, shoulders).
To me -that's not a look I could go with.
And a big loud 'no' on the fanny pack too. Just no - no - don't do it.

(31,828 posts)A bit more sleek. But I don't use it. I pick of Bagghy bags when I'm in Italy and I'm using one with Holly Go Lightly on it right now.

(31,828 posts)This is close but my work bag is deeper. I have a few of their Audrey purses too.
Go to: www.bagghy.com
Also - look up Capalbo boutique - Acri, Italy on Facebook - they are a huge retailer of these. They are in my husband's home town. If you want to get ahold of one - they can do a send sale. Tell them a Fusaro sent you.
So much better than a bulky yucky black rolling mini suitcase.

My first backpack was from high school in the -- cough -- late '70s. LL Bean, boring blue, functional and sturdy. I also wore a hooded Izod jacket and see that they're being sold "vintage" on ebay for up to $70! Damn.
I live in an area with a lot of college students, so yes, I see them around. But I also see purses, briefcases, messenger bags, fanny packs, tote bags, small wheeled suitcases...

LadyHawkAZ
(6,199 posts)The stitching on the straps has just started to pull loose, and it will need to be resewn or replaced soon. The rest of the bag is still in solid shape.
I do beat my bags up though- I tote around whatever heavy objects I can stuff into it. My bags usually last maybe 6 months, so it's done rather well.

I buy Ful backpacks. They have lots of pockets for keeping things organized. Then I put superhero stickers on the outside!

(46,436 posts)that I sometimes take when we travel, if I'm not carrying a whole bunch of gear. My husband has one that we also take traveling if we're going to be out all day and want to carry food, water, etc.
We don't have the big ones with the frames because we don't go for really long hikes.

(3,445 posts)I do use one every day, I like it so much better than a plain bag. The one I'm using right now is a bit small, but it's all I need, I usually end up carrying way too much stuff that I never use.
I also have a really old black leather fanny pack that I use when I need to be somewhere where I don't want to have a purse--going out to camp, working a volunteer event, those kinds of things. I'm afraid I'm a bit paranoid if I can't have my "stuff" right where I know it is all the time.It looks really stupid to wear, but I love it.

(86,634 posts)the one I cherish most is my large Camelbak with the 2litre bladder... use that one whenever I go anywhere for more than a few hours. I also have a small 1litre unit for short hikes and skiing, a separate briefcase/pack with thermal padding for my laptop... it gets cold up here for half of the year and a clod laptop isn't a good thing. I walk a lot, even when I drive to town (towns around here are small) I park in one spot and hike it until it's time to hit the grocery store when I head out. I usually park near the store.

(5,957 posts)Two are for actual backpacking, one for me and one for a friend who flies up from Florida
One is for an inflatable boat we'll pack into backcountry ponds in the Adirondacks on day trips.
One is a daypack for light day hikes
I use a shoulder bag for business, carrying a laptop, etc.

No need to remove the backpack to get anything and it is easy to wear in a crowd. You just slide it around to the front.

(27,670 posts)The ones I bought new, and which I have put serious miles on are a top line Eagle Creek component Travel Pack, an old Kelty exterior frame Super Tioga for hard core wilderness backpacking, an old Brenthaven day pack that could also be used for overniters, a Targus laptop backpack, and a retired Jansport daypack that I plan to give away. I have 3 other Jansport everyday day packs, two of which I currently use for musical equipment cords and connections, one Leow Alpine daypack I currently use, and Eagle Creek daypack, a Brenthaven computer backpack for my office stuff, several cheapo daypacks that i got for $1 apiece from the Dollar store, and a Black Sheep spare overnighter for guests who might want to backpack here.
I buy quality slightly used or new backpacks cheap at 2nd hand stores for ridiculously low prices and give them to people who need them. If you give a quality backpack to someone who can't afford a backpack in a Third World country, you will have a friend for life.
I like backpacks. Home is a backpack, the journey is the goal.

(39,961 posts)Specially designed to carry my laptop and other personal items. Who needs a purse? It's my 21st century briefcase, except much handier and it's still just as good as new when I bought it ten years ago with the application of a bit of saddle soap and polish.
I'm not sure how much weight it can support, but whatever that amount is far outweighs my ability to carry it.

(89,250 posts)of course they were useful for school.
but afterwards i bought a mini one when i was going to travel somewhere. it was for a wedding and very short but i wanted something so my hands can be free. and i continued to use it after because it is so easy to use.
i tried using a handbag for a while but the backpack was just far more better for me.
so far i have only had the jansport ones. but i want to get a few more "fashionable" ones for when i'm not in my usual jeans and shirt.
