TALLAHASSEE The parents of Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis led a crowd of protesters to the Capitol Monday to warn Republican policymakers that failing to repeal Floridas stand your ground law will haunt them at the polls this fall.
Floridas shoot-first law passed in 2005 has been blamed for a rash of high-profile shootings in recent years. The law allows people who are not involved in criminal activity to stand their ground and meet force with force if they feel threatened.
Last summer, George Zimmerman was acquitted in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford. Zimmerman was a neighborhood watch volunteer who got into a physical altercation with Martin, who was not armed.
This year, the law was in the middle of a legal showdown in Jacksonville after Michael Dunn was found guilty of second-degree attempted murder for shooting into a car full of teenagers and killing 17-year old Jordan Davis.

If it becomes a campaign issue it will likely backfire and drive move supporters of the law to the polls than opponents.

By: James Taylor | July 22, 2013
Floridians overwhelmingly support the states Stand Your Ground law, according to a new poll of 900 registered voters. According to the nonpartisan Viewpoint Florida public opinion research group, 81 percent of Florida voters want to retain the law either in its current form or with some modifications, while only 13 percent favor repealing the law.
According to the poll, 50 percent of Florida voters support retaining the Stand Your Ground law in its current form. Another 31 percent support the law but would like to see it modified. Only 13 percent favor repealing the law.

While I support the basic concept of the SYG law, I do believe that it should be rewritten. For example you should never be allowed to start a confrontation and cause to it escalate to violence and then use the SYG law as an excuse for your actions.
