The subpoena, received by the Port Authority on Friday, was withdrawn Monday afternoon, before reports surfaced in several media outlets regarding the subpoena, people familiar with the matter said. The exact reason was unclear, but the sources said that the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, who was already investigating the Port Authority's closure of access lanes to the George Washington Bridge, would likely take over any potential inquiry into Samson, who has come under scrutiny for apparent conflicts of interest.

Two sources with knowledge of the Mar. 7 subpoena from Preet Bahara's office said it dealt specifically with Samson's involvement in Port Authority actions. Samson, one of Governor Christie's closest advisers, is the founder of a powerful law firm, Wolff Samson. As scrutiny of him and other Christie allies at the Port Authority has intensified, a series of votes taken by Samson as a Port Authority commissioner have raised ethical questions because they appeared to benefit clients of his private law firm.

Representatives of the U.S. Attorney's Office in New Jersey and the southern district of Manhattan declined to comment. But some observers said it would have been unusual to have a second U.S. Attorney's Office conducting an investigation that overlaps with one already under way. Federal prosecutors from different districts do bump into each other during investigations that have not been made public. But in this case, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman announced that he was reviewing the lane closures, and Samson is a central figure in the controversy.

It's not clear if the withdrawal was the result of a turf battle. A spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan declined to say whether federal prosecutors in New Jersey were notified before the Manhattan office issued its subpoena to the Port Authority. The New Jersey office already had issued a subpoena to the agency, but it did not deal specifically with Samson.

apparently withdrew the subpoenas this evening. It looks like they're going to turn the portion of the investigation they initiated over to NJ. Makes sense. It would be unusual for there to be competing investigations.

Feds withdraw subpoena of Port Authority chairman in conflict of interest investigation

Federal prosecutors in Manhattan took steps to open an inquiry into Port Authority Chairman David Samson late last week, only to withdraw their subpoena for records on Monday afternoon and cede control of any potential investigation to the U.S. Attorney in New Jersey, multiple sources said.

Although it was still unclear Monday night whether federal authorities in New Jersey would pick up the inquiry, the development represented a potentially troubling sign for a close adviser of Governor Christie who is the founder of a powerful law firm and was once New Jersey’s Attorney General.
