England 'divided into readers and watchers' (BBC) {you too, huh?}

By Hannah Richardson
BBC News education reporter

England is suffering from a "worrying cultural divide" with poor adults much less likely to read books than their richer neighbours, a report says.

The country is divided into two nations, those who read weekly or daily, and those who prefer TV and DVDs, it says.

It finds key links between an individual's social background and how likely they are to read.

The research, from charity Booktrust, is based on a survey of 1,500 adults.

The study found that on average, the richer someone's background, the more likely they are to read.

They're called DUers.

In fact it's quite common now.

I remember when I first joined DU blogging and commenting on the net was a minority activity.

Now with facebook, twitter etc. it's a normal part of life.

Right now I've got Maverick on TV. So I guess I do read and watch TV at the same time. DVR helps.

who watch CNN/MSNBC etc. while commenting on DU.

I know a few people (myself included) who find it hard to simply watch TV, they have to browse their favorite sites at the same time.

We were poor white trash, and my parents were little better than scuzzy, dirty animals, but they did read voraciously and taught me the value of a good book by example.

35 years ago, there was no cable, no VCR, no DVD, no Internet, and many other things I could go on about. For most people, the only entertainment was either TV (broadcast) or reading, which most people had grown up doing.

The question I have is do young adults, whether rich or poor, read at all, and if they do, what do they read?

I think it is more the direction society is going that we all are reading books less and moving to internet based media.
