I'm 58, and I think Edward Snowden did us one of the biggest favors... for this Constitutional Government... than anybody else I can think of in the last generation or two.

(4,869 posts)Look at how our government has treated left leaning people and progressives in the past. They didn't keep a file on Martin Luther King Jr for nothing.

(7,288 posts)of DU members? Maybe Skinner has the answer to that.
Otherwise it could just be reflecting DU's age distribution.

(4,906 posts)solutions are rarely discussed in depth because the naysayers spend so much time inhibiting the natural progress of an op. I think this is an interesting poll.

(45,120 posts)Yes, Edward Snowden did us one hell of a favor. Ellsberg has always been my hero, Snowden's right up there with him in my view.

Interesting results.....and I am surprised at how few people are saying "bad" in any age bracket. I usually stay out of the Snowden threads because of all the hatred for him that I see. Apparently that is just a very small minority, but very vocal.

(5,402 posts)If the ratios remain the same as the number of voters increases, there are two interesting observations.
1. That so few ProSnows have been able to create such a disturbance on the boards for such a long time, managing to appear so numerous. 2. It's reminiscent of the Tea Party modus.

(5,402 posts)That is exactly what I meant. Please substitute the word "ProSnows" with "ProSnows (actually anti snowden)". I was trying to be clever, but it was past my bedtime when I wrote the bit.

(14,179 posts)Now we can see that its only a vocal minority on DU that are the frightened father-knows-best authoritarian chicken littles. Those that are afraid to find out what our government is doing in our names, those in power that think the great unwashed will never find out all the favoritism to the elite corporate class they engage in through espionage, Constitution be damned......you know because Snowden is just doing it to try to become famous...like all those other attention whores like Ghandi, MLK, and Harriet Tubman.

(16,529 posts)I'm a 50 something. Snowden wasn't the first whistleblower to try to warn of NSA abuses. My husband, our three sons and I recognize that Snowden's revelations were important as those before him were silenced.
I don't think it's necessarily an age thing.

(13,485 posts)although there are a lot of under 45ers I know of that are not listed on the poll... yet.
But the trend is still toward pro Snowden in every age group at this point, and at least the over 45ers are voting in this poll more quickly or are more interested in it.

(370 posts)I've seen people say he's a Ron Paul supporter. So, why does that matter? Ron Paul tends to agree with liberals on issues like this. The issue at hand isn't taxes, abortion, or any other bad issues Ron Paul has. Its privacy rights, and Ron Paul tends to be pretty good on that issue. I've seen people say he broke the law. So what? The law is corrupt. I've seen people say he needs to return to USA to face his charges. Why? He did nothing wrong, but that wouldn't stop him from spending the rest of his life in prison, so what's point? What would him spending the rest of his life in prison after being convicted by a kangaroo court because we have a corrupt government prove? Not a damn thing. I've seen people claim that MLK would go to jail so why can't Snowden? Snowden never claimed to be MLK, and doesn't owe anyone anything.
Essentially every argument against him is a non starter. Anything about his personality is irrelevant to the issue at hand (leaving his girlfriend, supporting ron paul etc). The fact that he broke the law is irrelevant if the law sucks. The fact is, the government is abusing its authority and Snowden revealed it, and all of sudden, that makes him the bad guy. In my opinion, we need more whistleblowers like Snowden. I'd be willing to listen to arguments against him, but I've yet to hear 1 valid argument.
