just to watch the new 300 movie. those prices are for the 1230 pm shows on a wednesday afternoon. they dont even show the non 3d non imax version until after 5pm which means you dont even get the matinée price on the regular version if there is even a matinée price anymore.
so i decided to wait for dvd instead. crazy.

(20,136 posts)It all goes back to the studio. And Theatres have to pay an exorbitant amount of money to rent the movies.
Ultimately the blame goes to the studios for the prices. Studios used to operate theatres too. They controlled everything. There's a reason that was broken up.

if you rarely go, then just view it as a treat or special time out and enjoy it. It's like going to most restaurants or chain restaurants where a burger will set you back nine bucks. I get get six burgers at the supermarket for the same price plus rolls and a bag of fries.
But the restaurant experience, often with friends, is worth the price.

(594 posts)Every Tuesday, all movies $5.00 all day. 3-D movies are $6.50. Plus you get a free 40 oz. cup of popcorn. And the seats are leather recliners. Sound system is full Dolby.

(15,139 posts)charges $19.00 for a ticket -- no IMAX/3D. I have no idea how they stay in business. No way in hell I'd pay $19.00 to sit in a movie theatre.
Blue_Adept
(6,400 posts)There's plenty of specialty theaters that do that. I don't think you even see the $19 price at the high priced NYC ones for a regular showing. I'd love to know the same so I can see what they show online for pricing. I've been doing theater related business for over a decade now and outside of those specialty ones, haven't seen that kind of pricing for a regular flick.

(15,139 posts)While some yelp reviews are positive, others complain that the food arrives cold, the service is poor, and the drinks are watered down. They do, apparently, have reclining leather seats. If I want to sit in a reclining chair and eat while I watch a movie, I can do that at home.
Blue_Adept
(6,400 posts)The majority of theaters aren't like that in pricing and it's those trying to eke out a specialty market that do. We have a local one that does beer and appetizers and the like, though the pricing is normal if not cheap since it's almost second run material.
They're not the norm though and tend to not be included in most ticket pricing talk.

(15,139 posts)are trying to create a luxury movie going experience for an elite few, but jacking up the price to see the same movie playing down the street for $10.00 less and providing less than stellar food/drinks and service doesn't sound all that appealing. It will be interesting to see how long they stay in business.

(6,400 posts)with my fourteen year old daughter no less, since she wanted to see it and she saw 300 itself for the first time the other week. She's had a good year for movies so far and loved this one since it was playing to a larger feeling than most do and entertained. I love that she, like me, has a wide taste in films so far. Going from the LEGO movie to Monuments Men to this and doing films at home such as Across the Universe, Love Actually, Road Warrior, Lethal Weapon... gets quite an exposure to different things. And she's begging me to pick up 12 Years a Slave to own since she was enthralled with it when we saw it in the theater.
Sometimes you just want to have a fun movie. 300: Rise of an Empire definitely qualifies, especially in how big it goes.

(6,400 posts)What things like this do is to get her to read up what really happened. She's fully in the entertainment-value zone of this while then digging into the reality. We talked a lot about Artemisia after that.

(5,725 posts)The theater gets little in the first week of a films release and then gets a higher percentage for the weeks afterwards.

This means for a movie like The King's Speech which built an audience through word of month over time, the theater would have taken a much higher percentage of gate receipts than the production company.

Sit at home, watch it on my 60" TV with surround sound.
And not have to worry about:
cell phones
people talking
parking
overpriced popcorn
whether I will miss anything if I have to take a bio-break

(6,400 posts)Especially when DVD first came out and you could get bloody amazing deals. But now I have a huge collection that I won't rewatch for the most part.
I don't do 3D, though I bought a new 3D TV this year and love it at home. I totally get the problems you have, but am glad that with the 7-10 times I go a month using my MoviePass card, I never have an issue with any of it. Lots of smaller deals, coupons and rewards to use to price it all done nicely. Especially since every movie after the third one is free.
