Car Crashes Into SXSW Crowd In Austin; 2 Fatalities Reported

Awful.
I have many friends there and love The Mohawk.

Two people were killed early Thursday morning when a car crashed into a crowd during the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, CBS Dallas / Fort Worth reported. At least 21 others were also injured.

The accident, which occurred outside The Mohawk club on Red River St., was confirmed by the Austin Police Department. Lt. Brian Moon said the two victims were declared dead at the scene.

The Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Service also confirmed the two fatalities on Twitter.

At this time, the names of the victims have not been released. Cause of the crash is still under investigation, however, police did take the driver into custody, The Associated Press reported.

Colin Kerrigan, a freelance photographer attending the conference, was stunned by the sudden turn of events.

A witness said the vehicle looked to be going 70 mph through the crowd.

asking, everyone was fine. Son even checked on a friend who works in area of the tragedy. I have thought so much on this considering one poster’s question about “What is happening to Austin?”, and asked my son a lot of questions. Austin is fine, still weird, still awesome, but it is no longer a small town with no crime. All it takes for disaster anywhere is one drunk making even more bad decisions. The locals probably like the money SXSW brings in, but they already have the vibe and music all the time. They play a game guessing who are wanna-be hippies, hipsters, and those who are obviously “L.A.” Also heard stories about artist no-shows like Kanye and Jay-Z, or Black-Eyed Peas who only played one song. But others like Green Day who played just 45-min but were very entertaining, and Blondie with Debbie Harry who was fantastic and played the whole set. My son works at clubs on So. Congress, so we met him there and sampled the free venues for 2 days. Cruised the street, sat on a bench eating Amy’s Ice Cream listening to music, sat outside the Continental Club listening to music and people watching, checked the shops and vendor booths, loved the new Tom’s Roasting Co. (and shoes) especially since Jo’s was crowded, actually met one of my favorite singers now lovingly/laughingly referred to as my new BFF, and always a last stop at Big Top Candy Store where we sampled chocolate-covered bacon. Austin is still a treat for the senses with good weather, beautiful people walking their dogs everywhere, great music and great food...
