Oregon joins New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania in shielding its residents from food stamp cuts
Gov. John Kitzhaber decided this week that Oregon will be the fourth state to avoid food stamp cuts included in the federal farm bill.
The decision, made public Wednesday, means some 100,000 Oregon households wont see their food stamp benefits decline after all. They were expected to lose benefits averaging $58 a month.
Well done, Governor Kitzhaber, well done. And well done to the 6,285 Oregonian members of the Daily Kos community who sent emails directly to Kitzhaber's office, urging him to take this action. Oregon Kossacks rock!
About one-third of the cuts to food stamp that passed in the farm bill have now been restored. At Daily Kos, we are going to keep piling on until all of the funding is restored.
If you live in one of the 11 remaining states where low-income Americans are still facing the threat of food stamp cutsCalifornia, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, or Wisconsinthen click here to sign and send a petition directly to your governor, urging them to take the appropriate action to restore food stamp funding.
And if you live in a state with a Republican governor, or a conservative Democrat, sign and send the petition anyway. Conservadem Andrew Cuomo did this in New York. Republican Tom Corbett did this in Pennsylvania. We can get them all to do this. Sign and send the petition now: Tell your governor to reverse all food stamp cuts.

And then there were five. Montana has become the fifth state to avert cuts to food stamps:
On Wednesday, Governor Bullock increased payments from the state's energy assistance program to eligible snap participants so they could meet the increased amount. The move costs the state about $24,000 more per year.
That $24,000 per year will preserve $2 million in nutrition assistance for Montana families. Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, and Oregon had already done so. That means about a third of the nutrition cuts passed by Congress have been averted in the states, Chris Bowers wrote late Wednesday night when Oregon acted. But there's more to be done:

(297,347 posts)thanks ProSense.
I said before that there should be a way to isolate Republicans and force them to support SNAP.
For example, each Congressional delegation/Rep/Senator would have to request funding for their constituents, much in the same way they do earmarks.
This is working out almost the same. They're going to have to defend their actions to their constituents.

(19,537 posts)... here at a county platform committee meeting here in Oregon that we were going to also forward to Kitzhaber to get action on. It's nice to know that he and the legislature are a step ahead of us too. Might change it to just be a motion to thank them for doing the right thing instead now to let him know we've got their backs.
In addition to pointing out that when dealing with this locally, both Dems and Republicans have fought these cuts, I also noted that Oregonians could use more heating assistance anyway in light of the recent heavy record snow storm we had not much more than a month ago, that might become more of a regular event with climate change becoming more of an issue in the coming years. This has to be a win/win for Dems now!

(14 posts)Imagine if every Blue State did the same thing. This would leave only the Red State populations feeling the effects. Let these Pukes hurt their OWN constituents and maybe, just maybe, we can flip some Red States to blue! Especially among the poor, rural, low-information Fox News viewers on food stamps! I live in Oklahoma. My wife works at a food bank. Those on SNAP here are nearly ALL white evangelicals!

(39,215 posts)not one of the states being cut. I do not understand all of this - especially how it could effect some states and not others. I am pleased to see that these states are fighting back.

(45,319 posts)favorable to the beneficiaries than the formula used in other States, relating to both food and heating assistance. The changes imposed the less favorable formula onto all States, Oregon and the others are simply sticking with their commitment to the most vulnerable in all areas.

(25,111 posts)Hopefully more than half of the states do this leaving the bulk of cuts to the states basically controlled by GOPers and maybe finally their constituents will learn how their party truly care about them - ummm not.
Anywho good news. Reading from the article - southern states don't have low-income families???

(14,881 posts)Independent (former dem) Elliot Cutler pulled 37% of the vote.
The dem candidate (forget her name, Elizabeth somebody) got 20%.
The scary thing is that Cutler is running again, with conversadem Rep Mike Michaud running as the dem candidate.
Michaud better run a really, really strong campain or we could be stuck with 4 more years in hell. Either that, or run such a crappy campaign that Cutler can edge out LePage this time around.
LePage was recently highlited as possibly the *worst* GOP gov of them all.

(39,215 posts)in the parties.
Democrats tend to do things that benefit the poor IF it helps them in their elections and it usually does.
On the other hand rethugs cut as much as they can get by with and ALWAYS add more paperwork to try to catch the welfare fraud. In reality what they do is add to the bureaucracy. More paper pushers. In the end they do not find as much fraud as they think they are going to so it is just a political move to impress their followers. In doing so they spend megabucks to find a dimes worth of fraud.

(45,319 posts)also very good. I hear tell that in most of the country, folks are still arguing about who 'stayed home' in 2010. I offer that they might consider ending the argument and looking to Oregon and the several other States that did very well in those years, finding out what is different here than in the places that have lower turn out.

(45,319 posts)That is without a doubt a major factor in our good turnouts, along with worthy candidates and issues.
Vote by mail was here when I got here, those who made that happen have my respect.

(17,528 posts)We need stickers (only in blue states) lol to put on our cars that say "Vote by mail".
Don't need/want them in red states.
We need ads on TV to remind people and give dates they must get letters in requesting absentee ballots. Our politicians need to request it in there speeches.

(45,319 posts)When I first got here, the first (before we moved into the actual house, still in hotels) thing I did to get involved was go make phone calls trying to stop Measure 36. And it went through. We almost moved. But we stayed. It would be most excellent if it is overturned by another vote of the people. I believe it will be.

Forcing mmj patients to buy from retail shops with no experience in mmj, little to no quality control, forcing them to put what should be private between them an their doctor on a list so it can be sent on demand to our Stasi, or police...
And I really like this one - Forbid the growing of marijuana except by registered facilities.
HEY STUPID PEOPLE. The reason you are writing these rules is because you couldn't enforce the old ones - figure it out like Colorado, where they aren't threatened by letting people grow a little on their own. Quit being such toadies to the Feds, and get your thinking into this century.
Or just keep throwing away money and people's lives in your little prison industrial complex, and hoping you can find enough toadies to tell you that you are doing a good job.

(25,183 posts)a token payment of one dollar is replaced by a token payment of twenty dollars. Does anyone really think that there's not going to be a "fix" for this in the next bill that manages to get through the House of Representatives and to the President's desk?
It strikes me as horribly naive that the Repukes thought this would work in the first place, I predict that they'll revisit the issue soon. If the token payment is raised to something that will really cut into a state's budget (say, $1,000 per family) and it's attached to a debt ceiling limit, will Obama refuse to sign it?

(10,495 posts)And pays discounted rent of $150 plus utilities etc. He was getting a whole $87 in food stamps! Now he only gets $50 something for the month. When I saw the Jon Stewart piece of Fox heads talking about buying Lobster with food stamps and the other expensive foods I wanted to scream! Besides, why should they have to only eat cheap shit all of the time! Are they not entitled to get something they crave every once in awhile? Here in Texas they want him to eat shit and die!
