In this instance, for example, they could be counted on to point out to the judge his error: that the defendant's ignorance of the law can be no excuse. That's a meaningful contribution to a political discussion.

Often, people will overlook wrongs done by family members. When the wrongs are done by another party, it can be a whole other story. Same as it ever was.
