We probably have Richard Nixon to blame for this.
When he was running for president in 1968, Nixon decided, against the advice of just about everyone around him, that he needed to improve his image with the hip crowd by making a cameo appearance on the new edgy comedy show Laugh-in.
Nixon was on for just four seconds. All he did was repeat one of the shows most popular catch phrases. But his Sock it to me? sounded absurdly out of place for a former vice president who once had engaged in a heated exchange with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev about things that really matter.
The Democratic candidate in 1968, Hubert Humphrey, reportedly turned down a similar offer from Laugh-in, believing it was beneath a presidential candidate.

(24,347 posts)because the President went on a comedy show.
Presidents and Presidential candidates appeared on Letterman and Leno all the time, yet I don't recall that being a problem.

(45,319 posts)Nixon was stilted, out of place and disconnected from what he did, as are most of the politicians who do SNL or whatever. Obama was very good, he 'gets' the joke, takes part in the joke and communicates with vast amounts of Americans (big part of the job) in a way that Republicans do not understand and will never be able to imitate.
I keep posting this Mel Brooks quote, and I'm going to do it again:
"Rhetoric does not get you anywhere, because Hitler and Mussolini are just as good at rhetoric. But if you can bring these people down with comedy, they stand no chance."

They simply can not stand the fact a black man is President and he got there by beating their sorry asses, not once but twice.
