Calls for gay rights protest at Fred Phelps’ funeral

While some have called for the leader of the 'God Hates Fags' Westboro Baptist Church to be given a taste of his own medicine, Kansas gay rights campaigners believe the LGBTI community should take the high road

17 MARCH 2014 | BY JOE MORGAN

Several people have called to hold a gay rights protest at the funeral of Fred Phelps, the leader of the ‘God Hates Fags’ Westboro Baptist Church.

While he has not passed on yet, his estranged son Nate has confirmed the father of the ‘most hated family in America’ is on his deathbed.

He is currently in Midland Hospice house in Topeka, Kansas. No other information is available about his condition.

The Westboro Baptist Church, a cult-like organization based in Kansas has for years picketed soldiers’ funerals and protested against LGBTI rights.

3. When the time comes, I suspect that's what Westboro wants to happen so I say ignore it

Just let the event pass, unacknowledged so as to not give them any publicity or cause for more litigation. After all, that's their bread and butter.

multicolored signs that are modeled on the ones that his crew uses, only the signs would have words culled from Phelp's favorite book that talk about things like forgiving sinners and showing mercy to assholes.

I think a "We forgive you, you hate-mongering asshole, your trespasses" demonstration would be a suitable punctuation to the end of that bastard's miserable life. Call it High Road: With a Vengeance!

to be put in the ground and to have nobody give a royal fuck.

Take the high road. Maybe when the WBC finally realizes nobody truly cares they'll finally collapse.

8. I think that nobody at all should show up for his funeral.

Let his passing be in obscurity and go unnoticed.

Don't give him and his incestuous band of followers any further attention. Let them wither and disappear on their own.

9. The signs should all be blank, and the protest silent.

Instead of stooping to his/their level and spewing hate, a simple silent protest with blank signs should be made.

It would still make the point without spewing hate.

10. Perhaps not to protest but to show them how to love your neighbor?

LGBT groups can show up with placards reading 'God Loves Everyone'. Hand out baked goods.

Eh. Maybe not, it's just a thought.
