Russian Pol Snarks At 'Comrade' Obama After U.S. Slaps Him With Sanctions

One Russian politician is gloating despite being slapped with U.S. sanctions on Monday.

Dmitry Rogozin, Russia's deputy prime minister, is among the officials whose U.S. assets were frozen because of their support for Crimea's vote to break away from Ukraine and join with Russia.

Rogozin posted a snarky tweet directed at "comrade" Obama that brushed off the sanctions as ineffective. He asked in English if the President thought about how to punish those Russian politicians who didn't own property abroad or keep their money in U.S. banks:

Crimean Prime Minister Sergey Aksyonov, who was also hit by sanctions, tweeted a photoshopped image of Obama wearing a Russian colonel's uniform with an equally snarky caption. According to NBC News' translation, Akysonov wrote "I wonder if Barack will be promoted to colonel after the successful campaign to return Crimea?"

the perception by Russia/Putin & Company, as WEAKNESS on the part of the U.S. and Obama.

Stop making it about me. My message is consistent: sanctions against a handful of oligarchs is WEAK.

I brought up that Putin, Medvedev, & co., not being on that list is just another feature of the sanction's weakness. Even if they were on the list, it would still be a weak response.

Period.

...that's if one wants to take snarking on Twitter after your assets have been frozen at face value. Like I said in another thread, it's not like the sanctions can't be expanded, and not everyone agrees with your assessment.

Crimea's leaders declared a Soviet-style 97-percent result in favor of seceding from Ukraine in a vote condemned as illegal by Kiev and the West.

After a meeting lasting around three hours, the EU's 28 foreign ministers agreed on a list of those to be sanctioned for their part in Russia's seizure of Crimea and Sunday's referendum on joining Russia.

The ministers had "just agreed on sanctions - travel restrictions & assets freeze against 21 officials from Ukraine & Russia," Lithuanian foreign minister Linan Linkevicius wrote in a message on Twitter.

Some other stuff. A set of people are named. They may have to stay in Russia, and how cool can you be if you can't make junkets abroad? Of course they'll publicly pretend they don't care.

I like it. They are leaders who made the decisions. Economic sanctions hurt the average people. (and that would be the complaint were they undertaken).

There's no win to these crap situations anyway. We and Obama didn't invade Crimea, yet somehow it's all our problem and nothing we do is right.

And the reality is this is very 'real' to them. It is not just for show.

So this morning the Treasury Department sends out their updates to the Sanctions Programs and the SDNList with the additions as a result of the Ukraine sitchy.

There are basically ten NEW people we now have to screen against (lots of akas and interpretations - example Yelena vs. Helena vs. Elena) in Finance and Telecom. I would also say anyone engaged in any international transactions or shipping/mailing to any of these people from the US will be flagged.

When you get on the SDN be it for Burma, Iran, FSE-IR, SDNTK, etc. etc. or now Ukraine - the real impact is on Americans who may wish to engage with you.

So they (those added to the list) can be snarky - they can be defiant - they can even post pics of President Obama as a Comrade/Commie - but at the end of the day I'm going to comply as will everyone else engaged in commerce in the US that wishes to keep their paycheck.

I'm just shocked that it took from Thursday March 6th until today to list actual names.

And I'm shocked that one of the men on the list would behave this way. Are we sure Sarah Palin didn't take over this guy's account/hack it and post it? Because it reeks of something Sister Sarah Alaskastan would pull. Not joking - I'm deadly serious. Are we certain it's not someone from the Kiddie Pool on the right in America trying to make problems? They specialize in childish snotty snark.
