As many of you know I volunteer at the Veterans Hospital in San Francisco. One of our vets told me on the sly, that he was nearly out of food. He was down to a full bag of rice and can of tuna. The worst part was, his Cat Food, Kibble was down to the point he would run out, and couldn't decide whether or not, to give the one can of tuna to the cat, for the next couple of days so the kibble wouldn't run out too soon.
I contacted Social Services and told them the situation. They called the City of San Francisco Social Services and it took a few days but they called him and asked him what he needed. The first thing he mentioned was more Kitty kibble, and didn't require much for himself, mostly low sodium Tuna, and perhaps a few cans of beans.
Today Social Services went out to his little one bedroom apartment in a garage basement. They brought him a sack of potatoes, a sack of sweet potatoes, A bunch of Ramen, about 20 cans of low sodium Tuna, and about twenty cans of different style Beans.
Of course they brought him a large bag of Kitty kibble.
He called me to thank me. I told him it wasn't me but Social Services, and he should call and thank them. I gave him the phone number and he said he would.
Its a shame that our VETERANS some times go without food..or sacrifice it for their pets.. But this worked out, and I am feeling very glad it did.

(20,776 posts)You're most welcome but again, I only passed this on to Social Services and wanted to keep an eye on where it would go. His request for kitty kibble seemed a stretch, for they would rather feed the VETS and the animals come last...but they assured him He would get kitty food, and brought out the rest to make sure he had enough for the rest of the month. I guess Veterans benefits only go so far, and not everyone is 100% Disabled and can get that higher ranking check.

(10,952 posts)This Vet may not be the only one having to make a decision of whether to feed himself/herself and a pet. Some cities have a Pet Food Bank. You might want check around to see if San Francisco has one and, if so, keep that information handy for the next Vet that might need it.
AsahinaKimi
(20,776 posts)The Animal shelter has free pet food for poor people...the problem though, for this veteran is he has no transportation to get there. It takes a bus, a cab or a car to get there. He has none of these. He takes free Transportation to the VA hospital...but that transportation is only for the Veterans Hospital and back. Perhaps there is something Social Services can come up with an answer to... maybe the city has a program for transportation for people who are disabled.

You did the right thing, I'm glad he got some help and hope he gets some more.

(20,776 posts)I have seen other forms of Transportation bring Veterans to the VA Hospital, so perhaps they will provide an answer.
freshwest
(53,661 posts)Just as an example. Where I live, a person can call to be picked up by an ACCESS VAN for a small amount (which may be waived with paperwork) or they can get free cab service for the low income disabled.
This man sounds like he is eligible for Medicaid, that's what funds this. If not eligible, there is still help available, but they get a permanent disability card from the state meaning they are unable to get around.
With low income, they do not have to pay for these services.
The food bank here has the ACCESS VANs coming and going for people to get food and that includes pet food. This would a good way of him having a steady supply of not only rice, beans and ramen, but fresh produce and a variety of other healthy choices.
Where I live, the food bank is an access point for all the kinds of services that can be obtained, from housing, education, transportation, health care, employment etc. If he was here, the ACCESS VAN shuttle bus or a cab would take him wherever he needs.
Here are links I found googling 'San Francisco, access' and 'disabled transportation':

(20,776 posts)IF YOU are in this position, or may happen to fall into this position, than seek out a social worker at any VETERANS ADMINISTRATION Facility. This Vet happened to be at the hospital having blood tests as well as other things going on. I have seen and talked with him before...and I knew his information and was able to pass it on to the Social Services department, and they contacted him.
Veterans need to know there is help out there for them, if they ask for it. I know some are so proud they would rather starve to death, rather than ask for help. I know a few Veterans like that. Some of them didn't even want to sign up for benefits, because they were taught to be self sufficient. Some times you have to ask for help, even if its an humbling experience.

I hope Veterans like yourself know that even in hard times there are people out there working at the VETERANS ADMINISTRATION who care enough they want to help a guy/girl with such basic needs as FOOD. I hope all DU VETS will be aware of some of the things the VA Hospital can do besides give vaccinations, or give blood tests.MrScorpio

(10,722 posts)I think in so many cases all it takes is for someone to say something to the right people. I used to work at the other end of a complex with a Salvation Army food distribution center, and even here where there is a lot of need there is plenty of food donations to go around. Every other weekend or so the center would go through and throw out what was expired or wasn't in demand. I have to say, it always made me sad to see a bunch of food in the dumpster, knowing how many people it would make a big difference to, if only the right people knew who to call.

I'm wondering what's in store for this gentleman in terms of follow-up. Sounds like he needs someone checking in with him and to bring him some groceries on a regular basis. So may vets have no family support to speak of, so they need another kind of safety net.
But YOU did well today!
AsahinaKimi
(20,776 posts)Social Services. From what I understand, things like Meals-on-Wheels will only deliver food if someone is labeled Home bound. Home bound means confined to a wheel chair or unable to get out of bed because the patient is in a respirator, and restricted to bed, with a visiting nurse.
I am not totally clear on these details. The food came from the City of San Francisco, so it maybe up to them what will happen next. Their Social Worker will probably go out and interview them and then who knows what will come next.
A Veteran who is not quite 100% disabled can put in for further disability provide they will qualify for it. The other thing too, is that many Veterans don't want further financial assistance because they have served their country, and do not feel the need to be helped any further. I am sure you may even find DU Veterans who refused to take assistance when It was offered to them.
I personally know a US Marine Veteran, who was released from the Corps because of a Jeep Accident that crippled both her knees. After surgery, she was released, and while she certainly qualifies for Assistance, refuses to take it, because she does not want "Government Handouts" nor thinks people should be "entitled" to them. These are her opinions, and while I disagree with her statements, I would not try to persuade her to do something that she was uncomfortable with. Not every Veteran will ask for help.. which is why earlier in these posts I posted a plug for Swords to Plowshares, which does help those Vets who need a place to live, rather then allowing them to be "pulling themselves up by their own Boot straps" in the great outdoors. Living under bridges, or in building alleyways is no place for any homeless person. Some of these proud Vets demand to be self sufficient but if they are starving in an Alleyway...something has to be done, and despite all their pride, they should be given a choice of adequate shelter and a good source of food.

The potatioes will help; the sweet potatoes will help supply the Vitamin A that the green veggies would. Hope he has a frig, but if not, that might be the reasoning for the potatoes vs. green veggies. And you have to give people what they like to eat, or they just will thank you and let it rot (this is an unfortunate truth for some - not all, by any means).

Packages of Ramen can go quite far, if you already have potatoes and Sweet potatoes. They can sit on the shelf. He knows he has high blood pressure so will likely throw away the little packets, and just use the Ramen along with the low sodium Tuna. I can see his point, if you are trying to extend your food out to the end of the month, you want to have more than just Rice as a staple.

(20,776 posts)San Francisco. This city does have a lot of homeless and they try and help with low housing and shelter. The Glide Memorial Church is famous for their hot meals, as well as food pantries around the city. This city has done what it can to deal with many elderly that can not make it though the month on their small government checks. San Francisco is also an expensive place to live. Rents are extremely high, and food prices are affected by such things as what a gallon of gas costs in the State. Living in City can be hard on most... but thankfully there are many kinds of programs..I plugged Swords to Plowshares.. I think that started here in San Francisco.. and is doing well with dealing with the Homeless Veteran poblem.

I am glad the SF Social Services provide pet food. A lot of services don't. Yet pets are so beneficial to the lonely, elderly and those in pain. The love of a pet is more therapeutic than a lot of prescriptions I can think of, and a lot cheaper, with no side effects.

Where he can use secure messaging to contact his doctor, pharmacist, or social worker for future requests. Its part of the VA system and fairly new. It used to be a patient might have to come in for an examination and not know if they have to visit the blood lab for testing, so they can message the Nurse Practitioner and find out if they need to stop by the lab. This website is great for all Veterans and may have some valuable information a Vet might need.

(20,776 posts)But this is one of many Veterans that use this facility. There are so many, and I am betting that there are at least one or two Veterans on DU who probably could use a little more help, either medically or in some other way. Many are just too proud to ask for it, or feel there are Veterans who need it far more. One only needs to mention that there is a situation and people can say, hey we can fix that. I mentioned above about my friend Felicity who is a former United States Marine who had both her knees crushed while in the Service, in a Jeep Accident. I wish I could get her to reconsider getting any little things she needs from a new cane to maybe a bit more cash a month that she can use any way she needs, but she refuses any or all help. She doesn't believe in "Entitlements" or "Government Handouts". You can not force them to take this stuff..its something they have earned and would rather not take. They always feel there are people worse off than themselves. Those people will be taken care of .. and so could she, if she only desired it.

(20,776 posts)Subject isn't it? I could talk about forever how stingy and cold Republicans can be. I don't see how they serve the people at all in Congress or the Senate when it comes to helping Americans who really just need a decent meal, even if its just once a day. There are so many organizations in this country who try to help. The Glide Memorial Church is huge here on Thanksgiving day but serve people 7 days a week. The San Francisco food pantries are available and all over the city. I think maybe many cities are finding there are better answers than chasing homeless people out of the city because they think they provide an eye sore for the city.
Many of those homeless are United States Veterans who served proudly in the US Marine Corps, the United States Navy, The US Army, the United States Air Force or the Coast Guard. Some were even Merchant Marines during World War II. Many World War II Vets are still around, and Korea War Veterans. Vietnam Vets and those of Recent times like the Gulf War Vets... who served in Iran, and Afghanistan. The many who are stationed around the world including in North Korea and Japan...
Many who still serve, will soon come home.. and if they need medical attention they should receive it from the Veterans Administration. But when Republicans cut money to such Facilities you have to wonder what they are thinking.. that mostly these people are not important any more..and served their useful purpose. Sometimes when I see what Republicans in Congress do, in regards to Veterans it makes me angry. Its probably why I go once or twice a week and help out where I can.

(8,636 posts)It's a shame that any of our veterans go hungry!

(20,776 posts)And shouldn't have to happen. With all the Wars we have been involved in, there should be more in place to make sure people don't fall though the cracks..but that's the way it is..and ya' know I remember Hollywood making all these films about VIETNAM VETERANS who went crazy after they came back..they were the VILLAINS..of may TV cop shows, etc. This could not have helped the imagine of the Homeless Vets, past and current. How many times do we see guys sitting out on the sidewalk, on cardboard boxes, in ARMY fatigues with signs saying "Homeless, need a few Bucks". Meh...its nuts.

Goddamn Republicans like to lie us into war and then refuse to pay the bill. If the American people had to sacraface like WWII, the false flag wars of choice would end!
Why didn't the American people listen to and understand Eisenhower's farewell speech?
I'm truly saddened but grateful there are people like you that help those that can't help themselves. Excellent post, thanks.
Yes, it is something wonderful you did!

(20,776 posts)About 60 years ago.. in the 1950s. 60 years is a long time, but maybe that speech should be brought out once in a while, as other speeches have. Martin Luther King's I have a dream speech is heard all the time.. I guess with some people its priorities and what fits for today,... as I was saying in the above posting, I remember when Vetnam Era Veterans were shown as Insane Criminals in Hollywood cop shows. Even Rambo.. off on his own...being harassed by the towns people until he has to hide in the hills. Hollywood did no real favors for the Vietnam Era Vet or for Vets since then. People walk across the street when they walk down the sidewalk and see a homeless Vet begging for quarters, or put guards on the dumpsters so no one raids a McDonald's bin for food that has not yet gone bad.
Its nuts...there should be something in place for people who fall though the cracks.. and maybe there are more and more places popping up. Glide Memorial Church has been feeding people for a long, long time.

(2,323 posts)They deliver a bag of kibble, some litter and a couple of cans of wet food monthly. I looked to see if SF has a branch and this is their website. I don't know if they deliver like the San Diego Branch, but I bet they do. They also supply vet vouchers for up to two animals.
