Last night, Rachel covered the missing airliner story the way it should be covered at this point. She spent about 20 seconds saying that another day has passed and nothing was new. She went on to say, "We will not cover non-news as news."
And that was it. End. Done. Cable news stations, (MSNBC included), have been in an ongoing feeding frenzy on the story. They should all follow Rachel's lead, but of course, they won't.

(6,811 posts)and the tragedy is our state of media where we are so starved for journalism from the 1% media that some expect journalistic news out of a mere pundit.
a madness like expecting c-span congressional minutes or "PBS news hour" out of "this week in washington" or "mclaughlin group."

(22,666 posts)...and their absolute OBSESSION with TWO stories - it's all they cover. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for the past two weeks: Crimea and this missing plane.
That's IT.
Now, what goes on with Crimea is important and it's important to find out what happened with that plane. BUT THESE ARE NOT THE ONLY NEWSWORTHY STORIES right now! There is a LOT going on in the world but it's all ignored and excluded in favor of reporting exclusively on these two stories on and on and on and on and on and on and on on ad infinitum as if there wasn't record income inequality in the US that's destroying our society and our economy and as if there wasn't 25-30% of our kids living in abject poverty here and as if there wasn't a REVENUE problem ie: tax collections at an all-time LOW in the US because corprats and millionaires don't pay taxes anymore, etc. What about student load debt? What about climate change? These are all HUGE, IMPORTANT issues that go completely ignored by our corprat media as they OBSESS over Crimea and a missing plane (and AGAIN - these are important stories but MUST they be reported 24x7 to the absolute EXCLUSION of everything - EVERYTHING else?)
ugh!

(70,238 posts)i did catch that little tidbit and the rest of her show last night.
but she is right. the rude pundit posted here the other day about cnn talking about calling in the psychics, too.
and they wonder why people start to think that this kind of thing is covering up the real news. human nature demands we try to make sense of the nonsense somehow.

(15,063 posts)I have a friend who does. He told me that Tweety spent the first 15 minutes of his show last night breathlessly, loudly, and urgently covering the plane (non-news) story.
I guess it's anything for ratings and screw "journalistic principles."
