Jimmy Carter is making a call to action over discrimination and violence against women, addressing issues from female genital mutilation to child marriage in a new book out in the US this week.
The 39th US president writes in A Call to Action of his belief that the most serious and unaddressed worldwide challenge is the deprivation and abuse of women and girls, which he says is largely caused by a false interpretation of carefully selected religious texts and a growing tolerance of violence and warfare, unfortunately following the example set during my lifetime by the United States.
Out tomorrow from Simon & Schuster in the US, the book is already drawing positive reviews: the Pittsburgh Post Gazette said that it should not only be required reading in America, but should also serve as the template for a complete reinterpretation of the religious views behind our treatment of each other. The St Louis Post-Dispatch said it reinforces [Carter's] dedication to wiping out injustice and his ability to move others to join his cause.
Simon & Schuster said that Carter, who, with his wife Rosalynn, has visited 145 countries, his charity The Carter Centre active in more than half of them, was encouraged to write this book by a wide coalition of leaders of all faiths. The book will see Carter point out that women are treated more equally in some countries that are atheistic or where governments are strictly separated from religion.

It hasn't even occurred to many, so accepting of the ingrained lessons are they.

(9,126 posts)He is truly a person who lives his ideals. I wish more Christians and people of faith would speak out against the wrongful use of religion and misinterpretation of the teachings. We have a strange brew of so-called "Christians" today who are anything but. They are twisting people's natural need and longing for something more for their own power.

I am an atheist, but even I know that he is refering to Jesus's own comments as (supposedly) recorded in the New Testament!

(21,043 posts)at the church he belonged to (belongs to?) in Plains, Georgia. It was a wonderful, wonderful trip. Got to visit the home where he grew up. It's out in "the sticks," one of the best homes out there at the time, yet simple. Jimmy ran around barefoot everywhere! Saw the general store his dad had, saw the high school he and his wife attended. Learned that he got up while it was still night and freezing cold to feed the animals, and do things around the farm with his dad.
He's a humble man. His shoes (I was in the front row as he spoke) were quite worn out! He spoke with no teleprompter. This man's brain is intact, a genius, quick thinking even at his advanced age. He's brave and afraid of no man. Though I don't agree with everything he says (I agree with 95% or so?), I think he's wonderful!
The Secret Service searched us all fully before being permitted to enter the church, and Rosalynd and Jimmy allow 1 photo to be taken with them. Sweet people.
There are also many other things to see around Plains. There's a nearby city which is a sort of hub for Habitat for Humanity, I think. There's also a gorgeous hotel from the 20s, which is said to be haunted. Lots of stuff.

(21,043 posts)reasons, however, the tourist guides will tell you all kinds, and you get to see the house where he lived from the inside (furnished and all so you can know what it was like to live in it), the farm, the general store, the outhouses (yes, they had outhouses most of their lives, though they later put in a rudimentary bathroom you'll get to see. You can go through the entire high school and sit in his classrooms and go to the assembly hall, etc. You can visit downtown Plains, and see Billy's shop, the bed and breakfast place, and there's a memorabilia store there with LOTS of authentic stuff. I bought some really ancient political buttons!
Hey, I just googled it for you and look, President Carter is STILL teaching Sunday school. http://www.nps.gov/jica/planyourvisit/sundayschoolschedule.htm
See him while you still can! Life is not eternal for any of us.
Before he does his Sunday school teaching, he will call out questions and people who are there (mostly to see him lol) answer, and he'll even point to people and ask them questions, he laughs, and then he'll start talking (without teleprompter, just from his head), and he will even bring in topics of political importance and justice issues while teaching Sunday school!!! At ours, he spoke of Latin America. And yes, he speaks of God.

(51,630 posts)He was definitely "pro life" (i.e. pro forced birth) when he ran for president. That is how he got Christian nutbag Michele Bachmann to work on his campaign, being a fellow "pro lifer" and all.
LeftishBrit
(41,208 posts)senior year at university (1977-78); so working on Carter's campaign was her last gasp at being a Dem. The Wikipedia entry also states that she became disillusioned with Carter because of, among other things, his 'support for legalized abortion'.
So I think that to regard Carter as a religious right-winger because the young Bachmann worked on his campaign, is like regarding Goldwater as a Dem because Hillary Clinton worked on his campaign.
SunSeeker
(51,630 posts)According to Wikipedia, he is a pro lifer, citing his anti choice position stated while appearing on the Laura Ingraham Show in 2012.

Carter said toning down the stridently pro-abortion position would help win back Republicans who abandoned the Democrats because of abortion and other liberal social issue positions.
Carter said:
I never have believed that Jesus Christ would approve of abortions and that was one of the problems I had when I was president having to uphold Roe v. Wade and I did everything I could to minimize the need for abortions. I made it easy to adopt children for instance who were unwanted and also initiated the program called Women and Infant Children or WIC program thats still in existence now. But except for the times when a mothers life is in danger or when a pregnancy is caused by rape or incest I would certainly not or never have approved of any abortions.

Apparently, Jimmy believing in Jesus and all has convinced him that forcing women to give birth against their will is something he "approves of." So when he warns that the Bible is being used to promote the abuse women and girls, I guess he oughta know!

(4,631 posts)There's a lot of text in religions that is not exactly women friendly. Some oppressive governments and countries use these written words as their rules and regulations. There is a lot to fix out there.

(40,367 posts)he writes of how some selected scriptures are interpreted, almost exclusively by powerful male leaders within the Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and other faiths, to proclaim the lower status of women and girls.
This claim that women are inferior before God spreads to the secular world to justify gross and sustained acts of discrimination and violence against them, writes Carter."

(22,666 posts)...to write a BOOK about it and to try to change it.
The man has actual, genuine MORALS (not the fakey kind most so-called "Christians" tout). Jimmy Carter considers women actual HUMAN BEINGS with full slate of human rights - full stop - right out the gate.
That's nice to see for a change. It's far, far too rare in the world. Especially among some of the so-called "Christians" (no offense to those of you who, like Carter, are REAL ones).
