Potatoes, canola oil, hydrogenated soybean oil, safflower oil, natural flavour (vegetable source), dextrose, sodium acid pyrophosphate (maintain colour), citric acid (preservative), dimethylpolysiloxane (antifoaming agent) and cooked in vegetable oil (Canola oil, corn oil, soybean oil, hydrogenated soybean oil with THBQ, citric acid and dimethylpolysiloxane) and salt (silicoaluminate, dextrose, potassium iodide.
YUCK!

(4,795 posts)I'm down to 5 supersized fries a day. E-gorging does work and is effective for breastfeeding mothers.

When the hell do fries foam?????????????????????????????????????

(50,562 posts)Antifoaming agents cut down on oil spattering from the fryer. Oil spatter is a fire hazard.

(60,536 posts)other than how Mickey D's prepares their fries.
When I was in High School and worked at McDonald's (1964), we had to put the potatoes in the machine to be peeled and then cut the damned things (by hand) by placing them upright on a "machine," then pull the arm of the thing down so it sliced the 'taters into fries. All this for $1.25 an hour. Guess I should thank LBJ for that, huh? Oh wait, McD's was around when JFK was President so, maybe, I should thank him.

(146,324 posts)I went to the McDonald's site and looked it up some time ago.
They used to fry them in beef tallow. They don't do that any more. They tasted better when they used beef tallow.

I was probably not in America yet...
Hrm... Now I have to look it up.

(146,324 posts)A few years ago, McD's announced that it was switching away from beef tallow, but I don't remember the year.
Here's a link. Apparently they switched in the 1990s.

(426 posts)They still have beef in them in the US, even if they don't fry them in it. I'm not sure where that ingredient list in the OP came from, but this is from their web site today:
http://nutrition.mcdonalds.com/getnutrition/ingredientslist.pdf
FRENCH FRIES:

Oil with TBHQ and Citric Acid added to preserve freshness), Dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent.
*
CONTAINS: WHEAT AND MILK.
*Natural beef flavor contains hydrolyzed wheat and hydrolyzed milk as starting ingredients

(37,573 posts)Have you even tried UK fries?
You think they taste as good as freedom fries?
Because if they did, I am sure McDonalds would love to save money by cutting out some ingredients.
What next, are they gonna add something really scary, like deoxyribonucleic acid?
FrodosPet
(5,169 posts)I heard they put dihydrogen monoxide in their tea and pop as well!
That stuff will kill you! It's a universal solvent that has the most effect on our climate. It causes suffocation, building damage...

(6,795 posts)We just moved into a new apt. after a long, long crazy time. All of my kitchen/cookware/spices/plates/dishes/cups are in storage in another state. I am not buying any new stuff. I will wait til my stuff gets here. I have toooo much good stuff. We are pretty much broke and like I said, I refuse to buy anything new.
I do not even have a pan or a pot or a plate. I have silverware, foil, Gladware and red Solo cups.
No choice right now.
This from someone who had 4 raised gardens in her backyard and cooked a huge meal every night. It sucks, bigtime.

(65,616 posts)Was my first job at 15 and we had these big square tubs of lard and the fries tastes a million times better! I think that was the only ingredient we added to the fries. I try not to eat fast food anymore and avoid McDonalds at all costs.

(9,894 posts)in the lard days, too. Best fries ever. I still go there on occasion, but I can't do the fries. I still remember the way they used to be.

(23,558 posts)They used to advertise that they used vegetable oil to make the fries. That implies the fries are vegetarian.
But, they were sprinkling beef tallow on the fries. They got sued from a religious group. Not for much, only a few thousand dollars and the vegetarians won.

(26,219 posts)I have several tubs of lard but also use peanut and olive oil for some dishes.
If anyone has a Five Guys near them - they ONLY cook with peanut oil. Warnings posted everywhere about it because of allergies. Best burgers EVER.

(10,942 posts)It is possible for McDonalds to do fries differently and get the same results, but the shelf life would me hours instead of days or weeks, frozen. Vegetable source natural flavor could be something like Onion Salt, which is commonly used by even small restaurants. Citric Acid could come from lemons or limes. If you use iodine salt, you get the ingredients listed with it - one is an anti-caking additive that has been used for decades, another has been used for almost 50 years to fight goiter, the other is a form of starch that occurs naturally in nature and has been used in food for likely a century. I am not defending McDonald's food, I think it is trash and the company should be able to do better without impacting profits.
Democracyinkind
(4,015 posts)"High quality food" may be a bad choice of words - rather, let's say: food made from high-quality ingredients, all while being mindful to incorporate local production and to conform to high ecological standards. Also, McDonald's pays decent wages in much of Europe.
Then again, most Americans probably couldn't afford McDonald's at european prices.
As someone who has lived in both places, I have found the difference to be striking and intriguing.

(16,178 posts)one pound chicken sausage, hot and mild mixed, sliced and browned in a large skillet, 5 red skinned potatos cut into squares (not quite diced), one onion cut into squares, two green peppers cut into squares, 3/4 cup of water, some oregano, basil, garlic salt, pepper and a pinch of salt. cook on low heat for 30 minutes. HMMMMMMMMMM, better than anything from that place and it basically cost as much as two of their fat loaded burger meals.
their food is like biting into fat chunks to me, even the lettuce and tomato don't come near a real taste.
