UN Vote on Crimea Proves Russia is Not Isolated - Envoy Churkin

21:48 27/03/2014

UNITED NATIONS, March 27 (RIA Novosti) - The vote by the United Nations on a resolution declaring Crimea's referendum invalid clearly showed that Russia is not alone on the world arena, the country's UN envoy said Thursday.

The 193-nation UN General Assembly passed the non-binding resolution with 100 votes in favor, 11 against, and 58 abstentions.

Armenia, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, North Korea, Nicaragua, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Zimbabwe joined Russia in rejecting the document.

“The result is rather satisfying for us as we have won a moral and a political victory,” Vitaly Churkin said.

“It clearly shows that Russia is not isolated [by the international community],” the diplomat said.

Kinda sounds like this, which is an accurate description of The Wizard of Oz, except we only ever saw it through Dorothy's eyes:

Transported to a surreal landscape, a young girl kills the first person she meets and then teams up with three strangers to kill again.

There's what the spin is, then there's what actually happened.

Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania.
All ruled by directly by Russia within living memory.
Then there's the old colonial holdings: Poland, Rumania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Slovenia. Nothing.
Albania, Kosovo, Croatia: zip.
Don't see Serbia either, which has to be a mistake.
All of these have intimate knowledge of how Russia works. Yet they chose to either vote against or not vote. Can't imagine why.

16. To abstain is stronger than not to vote at all

The vote on the Ukraine-sponsored resolution in the 193-member world body was 100 countries in favor, 11 opposed and 58 abstentions. Twenty-four countries did not vote.

Germany made the error of abstaining, I wonder how much pressure they got after that.

By abstaining in the Security Council on the resolution authorizing military action to protect Libyan civilians — and by refusing on Wednesday to participate in the enforcement of an arms embargo on Libya that the United Nations authorized — Germany pointedly refused to go along with the political aims and leadership of its two most important European allies, Britain and France, as well as the United States. The decision made the idea of a united European foreign policy seem further away than ever, even if France had broken solidarity first by suddenly recognizing the Libyan opposition as the legitimate government of the country.

counting abstentions and yeses together, we're talking 69 out of 193.
36%.
On the evidence, no one who rejoiced in actually being ruled by them at some point in the past took their side.
So if we can't use isolated, can we use pathetic?

Then again, it's Russian state media. Anything from Russian state media on this is like from Pravda during Soviet days.
