Diane Ravitch Tells Bill Moyers Why School Privatization Is Turning into a Disaster

DR: Yes. An annual market of $500 billion. So the entrepreneurs do see it as huge opportunities to make money. There are now frequently conferences, at least annually, conferences on how to profit from the public education industry. Now I never thought of public education as an industry. But the entrepreneurs do see it as an industry.

They see it as a national marketplace for hardware, for software, for textbook publishing, for selling whatever it is they're selling, and for actually taking over all of the roles of running a school. This is what the charter movement is. It's an effort to privatize public education, because there's so much money there that enough of it can be extracted to pay off the investors. But I think what's at stake is the future of American public education. I'm a graduate of public schools in Houston, Texas, and I don't want to see us lose public education. I believe it is the foundation stone, one of the foundation stones, of our democracy. So an attack on public education is an attack on democracy.

BM: The people behind privatization, you say they're flush with cash. Where is it coming from? Where does this money trail start?

DR: You have to understand that firstly we do have a significant number of for-profit charter schools. They're not the majority, by any means. But they're driving a lot of the legislative changes. There is also the power of the federal government.

Our Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, put out $4.3 billion called Race to the Top. And he said to the states, you can't be eligible for any part of this money unless you lift your cap on charter schools. So suddenly the lure of getting that federal money made many states change their laws to open the door to many, many more charter schools.

The gap between the have and the have nots will eviscerate the very concept of the "American Exceptionalism" meme that they always shoot their mouths off about. Not just hypocrisy, but stupid greedy hypocrisy.

She is dead on accurate. We are watching public education dismantled around the country and she knows why. It's the same reason everything us being dismantled (hint: think corporate cash). And yet people here say she us nuts. We've watched from Wisconsin as a DEMOCRAT in Chicago destroyed their education system...and Walker will try to do the same to ours.

ALEC is one corporate cash cow where democrats and republican agree on since 1973. Our prestigious
Vice president Joe Biden signed ALEC legislation on the disparities in crack/cocaine drug sentencing laws years ago. Our current President appointed Duncan to dunk public schools.
Any one who says they are against private prisons and FOR private education is a hypocrite and is on the side of Fascism.

Siphon off gov't education dollars and turn public education into a "profit centers" and at the same time destroy the last, great unionized workforce in American (teachers).

Mr. Potter from "It's a Wonderful Life" must be spinning in his grave cursing that he didn't think of doing it first. But remember folks: It's really about giving the children the "best quality education."

It's all about cronyism and profit. As if we don't have enough corruption in this nation without encouraging it.

The Ruling Class wants big cash out of pre college education, screw the kids. Just one phase of the Plutocrats power and big bucks grab.

I'm not all up on Ravitch's past, but she went after the democrats pretty hard as well last night, and admitted she had been wrong before and has seen the light. All I know is that I'm glad I grew up before all this charter school and testing craze nonsense.

The democrats need to be democrats, need to go hard populist, go Elizabeth Warren not old two faced toadies like Baucus and Feinstein. To that end we the people need to engage, to push back hard. When I get fund raising "survey's" in the mail from the Obama team I give them a big dose of what I really think, I hope others do too. Let them know we're Mad As Hell, go all Peter Finch on them.
