Christie's office rejects The Record's request for GWB documents- see yah in court

After months of delays, Governor Christie's office has denied requests by The Record for public records related to the George Washington Bridge lane closure scandal.

Christie's office said Friday that the records are included in the report by the legal team hired by the governor that says he was not involved with the traffic jams.

The first sought text messages, emails and letters related to the lane closures of the George Washington Bridge between former Port Authority official David Wildstein, who ordered the lane closures, and various officials including Christie.

The second requested similar communications that David Samson, now the former chairman of the Port Authority board of commissioners, and Bill Baroni, the Port Authority's former deputy executive director, had with various state officials.

"The denials received by The Record today are indicative of the state's failure to faithfully follow both the plain meaning and spirit of the Open Public Records Act," Jennifer Borg, general counsel for North Jersey Media Group, which publishes The Record and the Herald News, said in a statement. "The administration has engaged in a pattern and practice of violating the state's access law, and it has yet to be determined whether it is due to incompetence, lack of training, lack of supervision or some other unknown reason. The residents of this state deserve an administration that respects transparency and understands that an informed citizenry is a cornerstone of democracy."

The company will pursue legal action, Borg said.

these are public documents. Mastro's client is the "Governor's Office", not any person. There is no right to 5th amendment privilege. There is no right to privacy. These documents need to be turned over. I don't know what's going to be in there, but there isn't any legal reason to bar the production. Stall, stall, stall.

Gee, and The Record endorsed Christie for re-election, too. You'd think that would count for something.
