Christie Raises Eyebrows With 'Occupied Territories' RemarkChristie
Apologizes To Donor In Private Meeting
................................
Just when you thought Christie's disastrous week couldn't get any worse, it does. Christie lost the $100,000,000 dollar Sheldon Adelson primary today by insulting him and his guests in Las Vegas.
Adelson, a notorious Likudnik, hosted a number of 2016 hopefuls this afternoon. One after another, they groveled on their knees for Adelson's cash by shamelessly pandering on Middle East policy. But then it happened. Running his big mouth, Christie described the West Bank as.... wait for it... "the occupied territories". Yikes!
Now it doesn't sound like a big deal to a person living in a reality based community. It's merely a neutral descriptive term. But it causes wingnuts on Mid East issues to flip out. They prefer the Orwellian term "disputed territories".
Then making matters worse, one of Adelson's cronies attempted to correct Christie and Christie reflexively bullied him:
A prominent Jewish leader, Morton A. Klein, said he tried to correct Mr. Christie as he left the stage, urging him to use different language, like disputed territory. Mr. Christie, he said, scowled and did not say whether he would do so in the future. I was shocked, said Mr. Klein, national president of the Zionist Organization of America.

In response, there were some "audible murmurs" in the crowd, according to Time magazine's Zeke Miller, who was in the room.
The term "occupied territories" is a cause of dispute and controversy. Palestinians, along with the United Nations, consider the West Bank to be Palestinian, but under military occupation by Israel. Israel says that the land is "disputed," arguing the Palestinians do not have a legitimate claim to all of it.
Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, downplayed the concerns, telling CNN Christie "wasn't trying to set policy. He just misspoke in the moment."

(3,595 posts)the Republican Partys most powerful insiders and financiers have begun a behind-the-scenes campaign to draft former Florida governor Jeb Bush into the 2016 presidential race, courting him and his intimates and starting talks on fundraising strategy.
OMG! Yeah! You read that right! They're so desperate they're turning to this guy!

...and republican Candidate "B" promises their undying fealty to The Almighty "Free Market"/Koch Brothers/JBS, and vows to abolish the EPA and any restrictions on American-style Capitalism -- but doesn't see themselves as running for P.M. of Israel...
We might get to see what happens when the three black holes of American politics collide.

(9,126 posts)but most people shout me down citing Mama Bush's quote. (That grand dame can lie with the best, BTW). It's gonna be Jeb if they can run the numbers and come up winning against Clinton. If not, they'll save him for 2020. They ALWAYS wanted Jeb, "the smart one." But they knew the boosh name was toast after lil boots, and that ANY Democrat would win 2008. So they waited, and slowly, he's been slithering up in the national psyche. Jeb is the end game, the culmination of everything they wanted to do. Bush III will be the Koch agenda on steroids. If he wins, I'm outta here.

And he "scowled" and didn't respond when someone tried to correct him afterwards? Yum!

(59,503 posts)The real scary think for me as a Jew is that the failure of the unprecedented push for a two state solution would mean very serious thoughts of whether I personally could support Israel at all. It would be a de facto proof that there will not be a two state solution any time in the near future. Given that Israel is still continuing to build settlements, it will become even more impossible. (Additionally, I doubt anyone of similar stature would have been willing to work as hard as Kerry has on this - and if it fails, they would be even less likely.)
That leaves only the possibility of one state. I would gladly support one state, where all inhabitants have the same rights throughout the entire Israel/occupied territories area. However, I see NO WAY that Israeli politicians would ever voluntarily allow this to happen at this time. That leaves Israel and its occupied territories - that are not free nor part of Israel. Add the settlement process that gives more and more land to Jews and it is completely anti democratic and immoral that this has continued to be the case since 1967.

(112,209 posts)different than for Russia in Crimea. How many Hebrew speakers were there in the West Bank before the Israelis built settlements over there?

(2,419 posts)Mr. Adelson hit Mr. Christie on the nose with a rolled up newspaper and said "bad governor!". Christie then went on to roll over, sit up and fetch Adelson's slippers for him hoping to prove that he was the best lap dog of them all.
