FDA asks pet owners to check for tainted jerky treats possibly causing animal sickness

WASHINGTON - The Food and Drug Administration is asking pet owners to help them pinpoint why thousands of animals were getting sick from eating jerky treats, mainly manufactured in China.

The agency has spent years trying to find out why 3,600 dogs and 10 cats in the U.S. were sickened by different brands of the treats since the agency first started getting complaints in 2007.

Of the thousands affected, approximately 580 animals died, ABC NEWS reported.

"This is one of the most elusive and mysterious outbreaks we've encountered," says FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine Director Bernadette Dunham. "Our beloved four-legged companions deserve our best effort, and we are giving it."

According to the FDA, 60 percent of cases involved gastrointestinal illness, and about 30 percent involved kidney and urinary systems. After eating treats made from chicken, duck, sweet potatoes and/or dried fruit some of the animals started to exhibit symptoms including decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea or increased urination.

That even some of the 'best' companies were importing ingredients from China (and continue to do so, even with some of the "top line" 'natural' dog foods) was enough for me.

I now feed a highly recommended natural grain free diet from Costco, as I have found Costco actually does seem to care about the reputation of its own Kirkland brands. I supplement with vegetables, the occasional peanut butter, canned pumpkin and I give her plenty of chew toys, but nope to the jerky treats.

It is tragic that our regulatory system when it comes to animals is even more inadequate than it comes to human-targeted products.

Last night shopping for frozen veggies, I grabbed bags of veggies at a Safeway in the heart of America's food basket, California's Central Valley.

Labeled C&W for California & Washington.

Small print on back of bag, at bottom:

"Product of China"
