In a meeting with the heads of the five service branches in 2010, President Obama offered the leaders a choice: Support my efforts to end the militarys Dont Ask, Dont Tell policy, or resign.
In a video obtained by BuzzFeed via a Freedom of Information Act request, Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Robert Papp revealed that Obama was unwilling to compromise with service leaders over DADT during a meeting in 2010. We were called into the Oval Office and President Obama looked all five service chiefs in the eye and said, This is what I want to do. I cannot divulge everything he said to us, thats private communications within the Oval Office, but if we didnt agree with it if any of us didnt agree with it we all had the opportunity to resign our commissions and go do other things, he said.
Papp talked about the meeting during a Q&A session with U.S. Coast Guard Academy cadets following a leadership address to the corps on Jan 8. The admiral was asked how officers should respond to policies that they disagreed with but were required to enforce. If I disagree morally with [a policy], its my obligation to voice that, regardless of the risk it might give my career, he said. Ive been in those situations. Ive been fortunate to have good leaders that have appreciated that. Using himself as an example, Papp said it was OK for leaders to not be thrilled with a certain regulation, but if they didnt see anything terribly wrong with it, it was their job as officers to support and enforce it.

So much for all the whining about President Obama and DADT.

(100,104 posts)Don't Ask Don't Tell was the worst thing to do. It is a horrible piece of legislation that was passed to appeal to Christian fundamentalist bigotry and should have been repealed a decade ago. Same thing with the "Defense Of Marriage Act" - denying basic freedoms is not American and certainly not constitutional.

(21,475 posts)Gays were routinely arrested, jailed, and given dishonorable discharges. DADT was a HUGE improvement over what had been. Christian fundamentalist fought against it tooth and nail.
I was going to say the same thing; DADT was bad, but it was a whole lot better than what was there before.

Good on you Mr. President.

(3,249 posts)... where the military removes and executes the person giving the unliked orders. That is NOT a novel concept.
Not sayin' it should happen here, of course.

Oh, yea, you noticed that the positive on Obama is a little slow to move. Some prefer spin with their glass of whine~

I keep saying that ignorance of history, politics, economics and the real world are helpful to conservatives (and are required of libertarians).

(37,428 posts)Not sure I'd call that particular stance gutsy...just consistent with a president determined to move the ball a few inches. I'm just glad he did it at all.
Really, really gutsy would have been telling the media what he was up to in similar terms--but that might not have been smart. Sometimes a little bit of chess really is the most productive way.

(8,879 posts)understand is that it isn't personal for critics of the administration. We take the issues as they come. When the admin works as we hope and expect. Pat on the back, that's the guy I voted for. We don't complain just to hear ourselves bitch. We complain to let people in the bubble know that thier allies are displeased with off-the-mark actions and we will not suffer it quietly.
