NYC may cancel contracts with UPS and revoke millions of dollars given to the company each year

http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/5078776?ncid=txtlnkusaolp00000592

UPS, one of the world's largest shipping and logistics companies, has decided to fire 250 workers who staged a 90-minute protest in February. The protest was organized after a long-time employee was fired over an hours dispute.

Twenty of the workers were notified of their dismissal on Monday. The remaining 230 were told they would be fired as soon as replacements are trained.

Local officials and union representatives have demanded that UPS rehire the workers and that the city revoke the millions in New York government contracts currently awarded to the company.

UPS also "receives millions of dollars every year in reduced fine and fees for parking tickets," according to NYC Public Advocate Letitia James, who will protest alongside the Teamsters at New York City Hall Thursday.

2. Sure they will. They're not independently wealthy and can't draw UE for quitting.

The best thing would be for NYC to shaft UPS to force them to reverse this oppressive bullshit. The proposal in the OP would hit them in their bottom line, which is all the owners care about.

Issa has done his best to give the USPS to these private firms, and we can see how bad it will be if he gets away with it. Customer service will last, and it will have a ripple effect through the economy, just as the GOP wants, anyway.

The Post Office ended up taking up the slack for UPS and FedEx over the holidays since the private company didn't want to spend enough money to meet the need. The more private outfits get these jobs, we'll have less efficiency without universal service.

4. There is a no-strike clause in the UPS - Teamsters agreement.

Oppressive bullshit? A no-strike clause means exactly what it says - that was the deal and they broke it.
