Sen. Coats (R-Ind.) shows up at wrong hearing, questions wrong witness

Source: Washington Post

Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) was prepped for an appropriations hearing on the defense budget when he took his turn Wednesday afternoon, flipping papers on his lap, reading from them and commending the witness for his department’s prompt response to a letter Coats had sent about a military accounting office in his home state.

It was all fairly innocuous except for one problem: Coats was in the completely wrong hearing complimenting the wrong witness.

After he’d finished a lengthy opening to his question, a staffer slipped Coats a piece of paper. Coats read it to himself, looked up, and said, “I just got a note saying I’m at the wrong hearing.”

“Well, that would explain why I didn’t know anything about this letter,” said David Cohen, undersecretary of treasury for terrorism and financial intelligence.

What the hell was wrong with his toady, er, aide, who is supposed to bring reference materials, his "snacks," any medicines he might need, and the spare cellphone, and sit behind him obediently, waiting for instructions?

That person is supposed to steer the putz to the right room, as well--it's part of the job. Someone didn't double-check with the committee chair about the room assignments...!

One of those people you see sitting behind the committee members; they're usually young and have stacks of paper, briefcases, etc., they are supposed to verify where the committee meeting is being held with the office of the chairman and escort the member to the meeting with his notes, documents, etc. and a duplicate copy or three of his prepared remarks. It's what they get paid to do.

It's a rare committee member, never mind the chair, who knows where the hell they are going unless it is an "important" committee meeting that is historically held in the same room every single time.

Who hasn't made some sort of relatively innocuous blunder in the workplace? Forgotten an important deadline, missed a meeting entirely or something similar? Not a terminal error, but a dumb one.

Don't get me wrong. With really zero exceptions, Republicans in Congress are scum. You know the reasons. But we should be more concerned about Coats doing what Republicans do when they're in the CORRECT meeting than what Dan Coats did one Wednesday morning in the wrong one.
