Republican Senator shows up at wrong hearing, proceeds to question witness

Republican Senator shows up at wrong hearing, proceeds to question witness

Sen. Dan Coats (R-Ind.) took a wrong turn. He began to question a witness after praising him, then after he’d finished a lengthy opening to his question at a committee hearing, a staffer slipped Coats a piece of paper.

When Coats read it to himself, he looked up, and said, “I just got a note saying I’m at the wrong hearing.”

David Cohen, undersecretary of treasury for terrorism and financial intelligence said, “Well, that would explain why I didn’t know anything about this letter.”

Coats said, “Well, this is the first time this has ever happened to me, but I hope it’s not a precursor of what might happen.”

Sen. Tom Udall responded, “You’re always welcome in our committee.”

Coats said, “I’ll go try to find out where I’m supposed to be.”

fortunately I didn't ask or have to answer any questions before I figured it out.

I'm just sitting there minding my own business, didn't even notice that I barely knew anyone there, then I wondered why I had no idea what the lady chairing the meeting was yammering about.

I clued in after a few seconds, it felt like forever, then tried to decide if I should attempt a graceful exit or stick it out and hope nobody asked me anything.

When there was a lull in the conversation I managed to make an apology and snuck out with what was left of my dignity.
