In bid for worst boss ever, Paula Deen closes restaurant without telling workers

http://wonkette.com/545691/in-bid-for-worst-boss-ever-paula-deen-shuts-down-restaurant-without-telling-workers

As if Paula Deen weren’t already just about the worst person in the world you could work for, now we find out that she’s also among the worst bosses you could ever not work for. First there was that discrimination and harassment lawsuit — a story which we are contractually required to remind you was broken by Yr Wonkette. And while the suit was eventually dismissed, Deen’s teevee show was cancelled she lost her big-money endorsement contracts. Then Thursday morning, Deen suddenly closed down Uncle Bubba’s Seafood and Oyster House, the Georgia restaurant that she and her idiot racist brother Earl W. “Bubba” Hiers Jr. owned together. And just to add that extra dollop of shame-butter, employees at the restaurant didn’t find out about the closure until they showed up for work. We are beginning to think this Paula Deen is not an especially nice lady.
The Savannah Morning News reports that employees had the privilege of collecting their severance checks in the parking lot.

The only announcement of the closure was a short note on the restaurant’s FacePlace page saying, “Thank you for 10 great years. Uncle Bubba’s is now closed.” After commenters piled on to condemn Deen’s failure to inform employees in advance, the Facebook page is also now gone.

But don’t worry! Everything’s going to be fine, at least for Paula and Bubba. In a statement from the restaurant’s PR firm, Key Group Worldwide, we learn that Deen and Hiers decided they’d “close the restaurant in order to explore development options for the waterfront property on which the restaurant is located … At this point, no specific plans have been announced, and a range of uses are under consideration in order realize the highest and best use for the property.”

It’s a relief to know that they’re going to land on their slippery buttery feet! Oh, and the statement also promised that “All effort will be made to find employees comparable employment with other Savannah restaurant organizations,” so we bet that even if they didn’t bother telling the employees they’d be out of a job yesterday, Deen and Hiers are going to make up for it by working really hard to help them find news jobs — they’re just such nice, considerate folks, you know. Bubba will get right on making some calls, at least after he’s finished watching his porn.

They called the staff in at the end of the evening, and told them the restuarant was closing right then. We happened to eat there that particular evening, and nothing was out of the ordinary.

It's not nice, and we probably don't want to talk about it, but it has to do with the destructive and violent behavior of some unhappy ex-employees.

I wish it wasn't that way.

the fear excuse seems absurd as well as unsupported by actual fact. Why aren't they too afraid to fire anyone when they are still open? Makes no sense at all.

Sometimes employees need to be fired or they will ruin your business. There is always risk in this, but you can't close your business every time you fire an employee. Firing all of them (as in closing the business) increases the risk greatly, but has to be dealt with. The safest (least risky) way to do it is to abruptly close the business. Pprobably a good idea to have cops around at the time also.

I don't like it, but that's reality.

They did break the story after all and the public shaming and calls for boycotts have had the desired effect, they drove that old racist out of business.

It is as it should be.

Too bad about the employees I guess but at least they got their severance check.

That's more than some people get when a business slinks off in the middle of the night.

That doesn't touch on the abuse, institutionalized racism, and robbery imposed on the "customers" that I had to deal with.

How about indentured kidnapping? Walk out that door and you're out of a job, hours after the shift ended without notice?

Doesn't cover the drugs for clients bounties either. Nor the robbing of the government.

PORN??? Shit, who fucking cares about some porn?

very sad that the owners couldn't have told the employees 4 weeks ago that they were going to close shop and if any of them wanted to stay til the end, it would be appreciated, but if any of them wanted to check out now they were welcome to do so and they would receive their severance and references.

but, that's the professional way of doing things, workplace violence be damned.

Paula Deen shutters Uncle Bubba’s — without bothering to tell her employees

"What’s more, she didn’t tell her employees but let them show up to work, only to find
kitchen appliances being removed from the restaurant. The Savannah Morning News
reported that employees were collecting their severance checks in the parking lot."

There's got to be more to this than Paula Deen's "defects of character" or Bubba's porn watching and employee abuses. I don't think they went out of business because the customers stopped approving of her views - 257 Chick-fil-A stores are proof of that.

And it sure as hell isn't because all the butter companies in America suddenly closed.

The Washington Post is reporting the employees came to work to find the equipment being removed. Paula Deen has recently suffered some severe financial setbacks - she's lost her television shows and endorsement deals. I get the impression she was using this restaurant for tax loss. Now that she doesn't have the big-money deals that enabled her to run a money-losing venture, she couldn't afford to pay the loans on her equipment and the bank sent someone over to pick it up.

It would have been nice if she would have warned the staff this could happen.

There may be some secret reason but Paula recently got $75million+ from a venture capital group to rebuild her brand. The fact that this restaurant was involved in the deposition which started her whole downfall probably has a lot to do with the investors wanting her to cut ties with it. The restaurant also got a few health code violations in March: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2582933/Hand-sink-used-dump-sink-Significant-health-code-violations-recorded-restaurant-run-Paula-Deens-brother-Bubba.html.

It is just better for her and Bubba's name to be linked in as few news reports as possible.
