I would find it hard to discuss issues if I had people on ignore. The web like the real world are full of differing opinions. To me, it would be like sticking fingers in my ears and going la-la-la can't hear you. Just my opinion though.

I also keep every PPR that was on my ignore list in there just to show that I'm a pretty good judge of character.

I just block pm's from the others. That way I can occasionally check to see if they've been tombstoned. Every once in a while a name will drop off the list.

Starting to add some gunners. These folks post what we use to call flame bait but now they feel the need to educate us all on what ever bug they have up their butt at the moment.

I find Skinner's use of the ignore feature to be one of the most surprising things about him. If I owned a website, I would want to see what everyone was saying, even the people whose posts I did not particularly appreciate.

Quite a few years ago, the admins put people on "forced ignore", and when we moved over to the "new DU", I just kept those folks on ignore.

I don't believe I have put anyone on ignore since the "new DU" began.

I just open an incognito window in Chrome and see what they posted. That way, I'm not tempted to respond to them because I'm not logged in and by the time I close the incognito window, I don't give a shit what they said. The people I have on ignore, to my knowledge, offer nothing of value to DU except shit-stirring.

Disagreement is one thing, but shit-stirring just to shit-stir is another - or they follow said shit stirrer around and mindlessly agree with whatever said shit-stirrer posts.

one election season when it got really ugly. I removed the handful I had on the list later only to find that they had all been TSd. I haven't used the ignore function for years and have no plans to do so now.

Differing opinions get me to think, so I have no issue with those posters. The problem is with rude, offensive posters, or those who crave so much attention that they flood the board with every last thought that crosses their mind.

Those I have on ignore, generally, are those who have personally attacked me. Ignore doesn't challenge their right to be here - it just removes them from DU for the person who doesn't want to interact with them.

I've entirely removed all from my ignore list from time to time and some don't ever go back on ignore...but some do.

I have people on both sides of the gender wars on ignore, both sides of the political divide, etc... it's about how someone chooses to interact here that determines my actions.

there are people on this board that deliberately cause trouble hoping to have posts deleted or posters PPR'd. there are many, many people I disagree with on this board who are not on my list, but I don't have time, nor the inclination to deal with a bunch of NonSense. Also, fwiw, about 40% of posters on my ignore list have been PPR'd.

Me either, nor those that follow around nonsense spreaders just to agree with the nonsense spreader. DU is much brighter when you don't have to wade through a bunch of crap.

Putting those members on ignore makes for a more pleasant experience for everyone, yourself because you don't have to see their hatefulness and everyone else that doesn't have to witness a flame war.

I have never ignored anyone for disagreement. I do ignore people for being disagreeable.

But I do acknowledge that this is not the reason for everyone who chooses to use ignore.

You could put someone on OP Ignore and it would just hide their OP's. You wouldn't have to put them on Full Ignore.

It is pretty much blatantly obvious who they are, and there is no sense in giving their posts eyeballs or trying to engage them. They are posting for pay and even if they disagreed with what they posted, they would still defend it to the hilt. Those that mindlessly follow them around and agree with them get put on ignore, too, because it's equally likely they are either the same person or just too lame to realize they are defending a paid poster for free.

... I'm sure that most of the people on my ignore list are not paid disruptors, but some certainly are. Others are just not too bright and after trying to find a tidbit of intelligence or insight in their words for the longest time I gave up. A couple were people who reliably had a negative answer to everything I posted, i.e. cyberstalkers.

For a long time (I went 8-10 years or so with none or maybe 1-2 folks on ignore) I resisted the urge to use it, I felt like it was "cheating". Now, I heartily recommend it. By getting rid of 20 or so folks with no critical thinking skills, or relentlessly defending the indefensible, DU is a much more interesting place. And, just like I can ignore uninteresting people in real life, why shouldn't I be able to here?

just fwiw - I also use the word ignore function. I don't see anything about the Kardashians, for instance. When Zimmerman was on trial, I eventually put his name there too, but not Martin's. I just preferred to read about that case apart from any defense of Z. Also Ted Nugent is on ignore for me as a subject.

Someone posted in ATA that they had "NSA" as a keyword to hide and a thread with the word "insane" in the title was hidden as a result.

It didn't put "Kardashian" on ignore for me, only "Kardashians" - or vice versa - I don't remember how I have the word listed - but I did notice it didn't catch one but does the other.

I don't even have tv anymore - if I want to watch something, I go to a friend's house cause he has the whole deal, huge tv, etc. and bring something to eat or a book, etc. Or I watch hulu or whatever.

My kids are older now, but even in elementary school, they were already getting wise to the ways they were marketed to. We lived overseas for a bit and when we came back, all their friends were crazy for some action figure thing of the day and they sort of saw how their lives hadn't been ruined b/c they didn't know about the latest kid fad.

Yeah, I stopped watching a lot of stuff when my kids were young. I also played so much music for them, I used to joke about knowing every word to songs I hated - the Barney era...

I hate barney. My kids love those My Little Pony cartoons. We had them but they are so much better now.

Don't know if it's still available as new, but I used to have a great Taj Mahal cd called Shake Sugree - songs for children. I still have probably. My kids knew the entire soundtrack to the Wizard of Oz because they listened to it driving to visit relatives so many times. I just couldn't deal with Barney. I had to leave the room. lol.

and when I do, it doesn't last long. Every couple of months I go in and, if there is anyone there, I stop "ignoring" them.

I can usually do a pretty good job "ignoring" without the formal function. I only use it when I simply don't want to give someone any space on the front page of a forum for awhile.

I DO hide threads, and I DO use the "ignore" function to ignore key words and phrases, rather than people. If I get tired of the flame fests surrounding the drama of the week, I'll put in those key words for awhile so I can more easily find threads of interest, instead of wading through scads of flaming threads about a single topic that I've already read about, thought about, and probably shared whatever input I might have.

This is a perfect time, as a matter of fact, to head off for an "ignore" list clean-up. If anybody's actually there.

In short, if I see you have a pattern of posting nothing but Obama threads that seem to be about hero worship or gushing over the guy, and that includes spinning everything he does as some kind of great thing, for example, "Obama just proposed cutting social security, isn't that awesome! Another progressive victory for the most progressive president we have ever had!" or, "Obama knows best, we need this pipeline. How dare anyone question my idol! They must be racist!" You are welcome to my ignore list.

And I also have some duers on ignore who seem to post nothing but personal things about themselves such as happenings in their life constantly. To be blunt, I'm not interested, and I don't find your life fascinating. Sorry.

I also have some words on "auto-trash", because I don't care about the strange obsession some duers have in posting threads constantly about these right wingers. Examples are Christie, Cruz, Palin. Not interested to see threads about their latest idiocy, sorry. I don't care what they have to say or what new outrage they did. Nugent would be another example, but I just haven't got around to putting him on the auto trash list yet.

I will on the other hand not bother to read posts by certain people on certain issues based on the tenor of the title or their previous posts. I choose not to ignore them entirely because they might, or some other reader, consider my opinion or information to be valuable should I choose to do so.

I find that those who instill that reaction tend to have a perspective that is inflexible without regard to any counter argument. In that situation, I feel my time is wasted, unless I can offer something to the others in the discussion or the casual observer.

In the past I have only had maybe 4 people on a permanent ignore but I have used it on a temporary basis for many if there is a squabble of magnitude that splatters all over the damn place, then after a week or two give or take, I take them all off. I decided to try something completely different as an experiment.

A useless waste of time and an annoyance are posters who start dumping snide jokes and disruptive ruminations usually becoming off topic at the beginning of someones serious OP. It's obviously just for the sake of disrupting. I have started putting everyone who does this on ignore, that includes such behavior on anyone's OP I come across. My ignore list has blossomed by maybe by 60 in the last week... and it has completely improved the experience. Most of the time, they never have anything constructive to say anyway and if they do it's not worth it. They are just non-existent.

I never put people on ignore because of disagreement, personality per se, philosophy or position. That would really thin out the conversation and the possible education aspect of DU. For me that's unreasonable.

NOW.... The OPs are so much more readable and interesting no matter what the opinion. So if I only put people on ignore who are thread disruptors and never ignore those with different points of view or personalities, voilà! It takes care of the whole DU thing for me. Disruptors stay on permanent ignore from now on, period. No, I don't mind good jokes and fun stuff if it's pertinent, it's the thread jumpers, disruptors and general jackass remarks that get the ignore function and we all know who they are. It's usually the same ones.

Ignore really does have it's advantages simply for the fact that it is an organizer and customization feature that works if you find your own philosophy for using it.

That's my one and only ignore in almost 10 years here. There are some people's posts I don't read because I know they'll probably make me angry, but I don't hide them.

For me to put someone on iggy, they have to not just disagree with me, not just be rude or bad-tempered: they have to deliberately 'bait' and taunt, and to do so on more than one occasion.

The Meta Restoration Movement is hard at work, they strive to divide and foment discourtesy among Democrats on DU.

I put up with a whole lot of shit, gritted my teeth, and refrained from using the Ignore function; some sort of character building/courage under fire sort of philosophy. And then, just a couple of weeks ago, I finally had enough of one particularly irritating poster, and I got rid of him. It felt great. A few days later, I eliminated another pain-in-the-ass individual. Delightful. I should have been doing this all along.....

That said, I really think ignore should make both posters invisible to each other as I have seen a few threads where people were going around replying to someone they know has them on ignore and I find that behavior a bit off putting.

I couldn't help but notice that some of the folks carrying on about the "rude people" on their ignore lists are some of the snottiness posters in their own right, and usually people like this get completely bent out of shape when their snottiness is met with a little pushback.
