Yesterday afternoon, Seattle police officers shot and killed a man they said had robbed a bank and fled, and then crashed his silver sedan. According to police, the man was holding a knife when he was killed.
Cody Spafford, a chef at Ballard oyster bar Walrus and Carpenter, was his name. He was 26 years old and had no violent criminal record.
"He was incredible. He worked with us for three and a half years," says Renee Erickson, one of the restaurant's co-owners. "And he was completely loyal and hard working and just as sweet as you can imagine. He was just, you know funny. Not anything like what's being said right now. We didn't know he was struggling this bad.
WHEN WILL THE SPD LEARN HOW TO DEESCALATE THESE KIND OF SITUATIONS

(11,417 posts)The idea is that they want to go home at night so anything that looks like it could interfere with that has to be taken out.

(32,023 posts)Just the police and they won't talk. The Blue line and all. From the links it does not appear he was "attacking the cops." But the cops will shoot because they can.

(3,891 posts)The news story said that the cop had been involved in two previous shootings. In other words, this is the third person he shot. I'd like to see the video before I believe anything.

(10,136 posts)There were no cars involved thus no dash cams.

(3,891 posts)Because I have seen video of them shooting knife wielding suspects before. Like this one.
There the cops lied and said that he was armed with a knife, and lunged at them.

(42,155 posts)why couldn't tasers be used at the very least? Then again, there are hand-to-hand techniques...

(34 posts)They had no choice , once a guy gets 15 feet away with a big fixed blade knife it's game over.

(9,766 posts)snip:
Officers and robbery detectives entered the courtyard of the home to surround the man and spotted him running onto the roof a detached garage. As the man ran across the garage, away from officers and out of view, a detective scaled a wall adjacent to the garage to get to higher ground and get a better view. As soon as the detective ascended the wall, he saw the man standing nearby, holding a large knife, police said.
According to police, a detective began talking to the man and repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife, but he refused, and a lieutenant at the scene called for officers with stun guns to come to the courtyard.
Investigators said that before the officers with stun guns arrived, the man, with knife in hand, ran toward the detective. When he was within 15 feet of the detective, the detective fired multiple rounds from a rifle, striking the man. Officers called for medics and began performing CPR on the man, but he died at the scene.
Although officers armed with less-lethal tools were responding to the incident at the time of the shooting, police are trained to use deadly force when facing a threat from a deadly weapon, like a gun or knife, a Seattle Police Department news release said.

(14,910 posts)Hate on cops for rear entry gunshot wounds.
Hate on cops for sexually harassing traffic stops.
Hate on cops for arresting journalists and photographers.
Hate on cops for using their positions of authority to recieve favors.
There are a multitude of reasons to hate on cops which justify community outcry and activism.
However...charge a cop with a deadly weapon. I will fault no LEO for taking split-second decisive action to intervene by drawing and discharging their service weapon.
FFS, have some clarity in your sense of reality.
