My understanding is that quite a few here would identify this as a noble and heroic act.
Can someone please explain this to me?

(13,869 posts)Or it could be both, I suppose...
I know what I would do, no question. Save the human child first, then the pet if possible. Even if it was some strangers kid and my own pet. Ideally, I'd save them both at once, though. My dog would be smart enough to stick with me as I carried out the child

(10,960 posts)Or did someone say that? And if so, why no reply to them there where it would make more sense, being in context.

(63,234 posts)It has been repeatedly stated that people value their pets more highly than humans, that dogs are better than humans. My question is an entirely reasonable response to that claim.
And I posted it here, rather than in one of those other threads, because I didn't want to thread-jack.

(24,472 posts)Let's say all humans in the burning building are safe. Should pets be saved at all?

(63,234 posts)If the firefighters decide that it's safe to do so, then I'd say that's up to them.
But if the humans are safe and the situation too dangerous, I certainly wouldn't fault them for opting out, either.

(53,093 posts)The people who said they would save their pet over a person don't have kids at home with them. Their pets are their family. Everyone needs love, and some people find that in their pets. What's to get so outraged about? It's not your life.

(154,021 posts)Our search yielded the family cat first, which was taken out by a firefighter. When we found the kid, well we took the kid out. It was pretty close by the way.
Both made it, and the kid was so happy to see her cat after they let her out of the ER. We kept the cat at the station after a vet gave her an a-ok. It was a very happy reunion.
Though I remembered a very scared cat clawing the living daylights out of my bunker coat as the Oxygen took it's effect. Thank the lords for that bunker coat!!! Mostly bacteria under kitty's claws, and it is not nice.
For the record, searches in smoke field rooms are by feel mostly, and kids and pets tend to hide in similar places. By your logic we should not have removed the cat until we found the kid. But hey, I actually speak from experience here. How about you?

(5,318 posts)...my favorite living person was my cat, Chibi.
Chibi is 5 years older now and diabetic.
VHMC -- Very High Maintenance Cat.
My only (human) "child" is 32 y.o. and on his own.
But if he showed up in the middle of a fire in my house, I would rescue my (human) "child" first over Chibi the Cat.
I think I could get both of them out, though.
Happy Ending.
