So... I think I got suckered in with a magazine subscription scam today.
A young energetic teenage kid came to the door selling magazine subscriptions this afternoon. He had a whole pitch about how it was some work incentive program for students, he asked me if I like to read magazines, I said I don't really subscribe to anything anymore because they end up piling up so he said I could donate a subscription to a needy group and they would send them there.
I started wondering about it a little while ago. I'll never know where the money really went. So I searched online and found some articles and blog posts about these door to door magazine sales are a scam. So I figured well, I'm out $45. But one blog got me thinking about them having my checking account info:

Should I be worried about them transferring more money out of my checking? I've never thought to worry about that before. If it's that easy to do why is all that info printed on the check for anyone to see?
Should I stop payment? I'm going to call the credit union tomorrow morning and ask them about the routing info and how much to stop payment.
Also, the kid told me verbally that I had 10 days to cancel, however, now that I'm reading the receipt it says the checks are deposited immediately and that I can "cancel this transaction IN WRITING at any time prior to midnight of the third business day after the date of sale." The refund would not include a $10 processing and handling fee.
So, seems that if it costs me $10-15 to stop payment at least I save at least $30 I may never see again. They say there is a $20 service fee for returned checks but if it's a scam I'm sure they won't come after it. From what I've read the people never got their magazines from these types of sales. Ugh. I'm usually pretty good at turning people away for things like this.
Any thoughts? Mostly about whether I should worry about the routing/account info on the check?

(19,926 posts)Well I've closed my account and opened another so that check won't get paid.

(15,042 posts)I tell them to mail me the information and, if I'm interested, I'll contact them. But I'm truthful, and tell them the chances of my calling are next to none, as I have select charities and organizations I support and my money for this is essentially tapped out.
I'm especially leery of magazine subscriptions since reading an article years ago about how the kids enlisted for this are picked up from inner-city areas, driven to the suburbs, and sent off to collect subscriptions. Ever wonder why, when you try to offer the kids a little cash instead of taking out a subscription, they're still insistent on you doing the magazine instead? Because if they don't bring back their quota, the bastard who drove 'em out to the suburb won't pay 'em, and won't drive 'em home.
And yes, it may be an overreaction, but you should probably consider closing that checking account and opening one anew. It'll be a pain in the tuches, but a pain you'll never forget and a memory that may keep you from doing something worse in the future.

(21,020 posts)I knew someone who did that for a very short time, and that's exactly what happened.
Also, like you, I also make it a point never to buy anything from a solicitor. One time a kid came around to the apartment complex I lived in, selling some shit and sort of barged his way in when I opened the door. He gave his spiel and I told him that I never buy from people who call or come to my door, and if I want something I go to the store and get it. He told me I was wrong (wrong!!!) to do that. I got more and more annoyed with him and ended up telling him to leave or I'd call the police.

(16,334 posts)I felt sorry for the kid (one of those "I'm trying to earn a scholarship things) and I even tried explaining how they were just being used and would never earn what they were told they would. I honestly did not need any magazines but offered to pay in cash and buy the KID a magazine but no can do. They want your check or credit card information. Around here, many of the sellers are from other countries so I think they are really being taken advantage of. It's sad.
