#CBS Announces Stephen Colbert As The Next Host Of "THE LATE SHOW http://bit.ly/1gd9Ibd
The CBS Television Network today announced that Stephen Colbert, the host, writer and executive producer of the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning The Colbert Report, will succeed David Letterman as the host of THE LATE SHOW, effective when Mr. Letterman retires from the broadcast. The five-year agreement between CBS and Colbert was announced by Leslie Moonves, President and CEO, CBS Corporation, and Nina Tassler, Chairman of CBS Entertainment.
Letterman, the legendary, critically acclaimed host of the CBS late night series for 21 years, announced his retirement on his April 3 broadcast. Colberts premiere date as host of THE LATE SHOW will be announced after Mr. Lettermen determines a timetable for his final broadcasts in 2015.
Specific creative elements, as well as the producers and the location for the Colbert-hosted LATE SHOW, will be determined and announced at a later date.
Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television, said Moonves. David Lettermans legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and todays announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night.

(14,400 posts)I'm going to miss his Colbert Report style. On the other hand he's a pretty good interviewer.

(10,362 posts)I'm not sure his style fits well with a format like The Late Show.
He probably won't care when he sees a number followed by all those zeroes in his contract.

(28,749 posts)I didn't go for Letterman's either so this really doesn't excite me in any way.
I wish Tina or Amy had a late night show...

(12,723 posts)As much fun as he has with the Colbert Report I imagine he looks forward to doing something else with his life.

(39,343 posts)His show was funny the first week, then it got old. We get it he's acting like O'Reilly (whom we don't watch)

(78,249 posts)I'm available. Or failing that, there's W. Kamau Bell, whose brilliant "Totally Biased (kind of the black Daily Show) got axed by FXX far too soon.

(9,898 posts)Letterman was never the same after he hit the bigs and now Colbert will have to go mainstream. I see this as a loss, although I'm am willing (and hoping) to be proved wrong.

(36,988 posts)which makes his comedy so great.
So I think we will see a less cutting edge on his CBS big time show.
All things must pass....

(8,322 posts)I don't. I think that persona goes by the wayside. Which is a shame because I think he's truly the best --better than Jon Stewart, certainly better than the guy he's replacing, and absolutely funnier than Jay Leno. Fallon and Kimmel and Chelsea Handler are all good. I like the new breed (but not Conan; that guy has never been funny).
It would have been cool for Ellen or Tina to have gotten the gig, though. Somebody is going to recognize that it's time for a woman (and soon, I hope).
