How the "Heartbleed" bug works

http://xkcd.com/1354/

In the novel "Jurassic Park", the reason the park's computer-controlled cameras and census-taking program never found the extra dinosaurs was because the computer software was told to stop counting when it reached the previous number found. If there were 15 raptors in a paddock, then during the park census, it would find 15 raptors, then stop counting.

The mistake was discovered a bit too late.
