The Worst Father in the US? Dad leaves babies in hot car while he goes gun shopping

It’s one thing to leave your kid in the car while you run into the house for 2 minutes to grab the library books you forgot. It’s another thing to leave your two children in a hot car for almost an hour while you go shopping for guns.
That’s what one Texas father did last Saturday—and his outrageous act has earned him the title “worst father in America.”

Dad shops for firearms while his young kids sit in hot van parked outside store in Katy, Texas. (KHOU 11 News)

The owner of Tactical Firearms in Katy, Texas, thought the crying five-month-old boy and 18-month-old girl in a baking van parked outside the store had been abandoned.
“Oh my God, we asked everybody in the store,” Jeremy Alcede told KHOU 11 News. “We thought times are tough and maybe they dropped them off in front of a gun store hoping someone would get them.”

does not have a law protecting children from this kind of neglect?

An interesting aside: Many of our laws are the result of parents who would go to the bar and leave the kids in the car. No baby sitters needed.

Better than a playpen. You can park it at different places, so they always have something new to look at.

And they are safely protected if you have a remote key and child-proof locks.

Hell, on a summer day I'd drive 'em out to the middle of nowhere, put in a Mozart CD, leave 'em in there and go fishing for the afternoon.

Leaving the windows up keeps the sound in pretty good too.

Leaving your kids in a hot car while gun shopping. Wow thanks for not only putting your kids lives in danger, but also making us Texans look even more stupid then we're made out to be.

Hope he gets arrested for child endangerment. Only in the state where the governor has the IQ of dirt.

my observation is that, whenever a father does this, he either doesn't get charged or gets a much lighter sentence. Mothers, on the other hand, have a higher chance of being charged and getting a stricter sentence. I think this may have something to do with how we still view gender and parental roles, even if subconsciously. Dads often still get more of a pass than moms, it's viewed with more horror when done by mom.

Of course, it also depends on your societal status as well. Back when I lived in Ohio, it was common for poorer minority mothers to be charged for this, but not the white, suburban mothers who did it. Prosecutors often said things about suburban mom such as "it was just a momentary lapse of judgment" or "just a careless mistake", whereas with the poor or minority mothers it would be something along the lines of "an egregious lack of parental concern and judgment", "egregious negligence and neglect that must be accounted for", etc., etc. All the circumstances were the same except for the race and class.
