A person with a mental illness obviously can also be angry. The illness is not the cause- it's the anger.

the mentally ill hear "voices".

Or believe they're being stalked....followed...hunted...

I would say that's fear.

So sometimes the illness is the cause.

Do you have any idea how a person who has delusions or hears voices actually behaves? I have talked with many and they have enough self awareness to know that the voices and thoughts originate from their own minds. Despite the stereotypes, people who hear voices do not believe there is someone "out there" to be angry at.

"many", but you probably haven't talked with all.

I personally have had a couple of really scary episodes where I was NOT aware that the voices were coming from inside my own head.

So I haven't just "talked with many"...

I've been there.

I have seen people say that mental illness is a part of many specific bad acts....hard to deny. .

I didn't have to ask who it was. I had been called down from another floor to start his IV and waves of seething rage just radiated off him then. He was a ticking time bomb of the worst sort.

I was correct, of course. It was the same guy.

So yeah, rage kills. Most of the time we get lucky and the rage-o-holic drops dead of cardiovascular issues stemming from sustained rage.

Others go on rampages with guns and kill a lot of people. Or knives, killing much less efficiently.

While rage is the root cause, the damned guns certainly up the body count.

I think the article I posted is important because no one seems to be talking about the possibility that extreme unchecked anger may play a role in our violent culture.

My suspicion is that the Ft Hood guy had been bullied, treated badly, teased, or assigned every shitty assignment. ...behavior common in the military
