it smells sooooo bad! Let me get this straight. Gibson Dunn & Crutcher took $1,000,000 in taxpayer money then promptly kicked $10,000 back to the Republican Governor's Association? Oh Brother!
The law firm that cleared Governor Christie of any involvement in the George Washington Bridge scandal gave $10,000 to a national political group he heads, a disclosure made public hours after the governor said donors like that should face no limits to the amounts they can give candidates.
Christie, a prolific fundraiser courting donors ahead of a possible presidential campaign, called for eliminating the nations limits on political donations in a town-hall-style event on Tuesday. Donors should be able to give unlimited amounts of money, he argued, but those gifts should be quickly made public.
The public on Tuesday got its first look at who has donated to the Republican Governors Association in the months since Christie took over as chairman.
That list includes a hedge fund billionaire, large pharmaceuticals companies and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher the law firm Christie hired to investigate his offices involvement in the lane closures.
Gibson Dunn gave $10,000 to the RGA on March 18, nine days before a team of its top lawyers made public a report clearing Christie in the bridge scandal. The report, which critics called a whitewash, said that Christie had no prior knowledge of the lane closures that created huge traffic jams in Fort Lee in September.

(273 posts)You give me a sweetheart deal for $1,000,000 from the taxpayers. I then take $10,000 and give it right back to you to support the RGA. They freaking gave $10,000 of NJ taxpayer dollars to the RGA! It was just laundered through that B.S. report they threw together. I think I'm going to be sick!

More trouble for Chris Christie?
"More trouble may be on the horizon for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, as the office of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance is now reportedly investigating the relationship between the Republican and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Vances office has subpoenaed information on communication between Christie staffers and the Port Authority on several projects, according to The Wall Street Journal. That includes the rebuilding of the World Trade Center site and a PATH transportation hub in lower Manhattan.
Vances office declined to comment and Christies office did not return requests for an interview from msnbc. But if the report is correct, it would be the third government entity probing Christies relationship with the Port Authority, which oversees much of the regional transportation structure in the two states.

"Christie will also deliver a keynote address to Rowan University graduates on May 16. At a town hall in Mount Laurel last month, six protestors who identified themselves as Rowan University students heckled the governor on a number of issues, including the lane closure plan. That resulted in Christie telling one interrupter to either sit down and keep quite or get out. Were done with you.

(2,419 posts)is this a colossally brazen laundering of political donations or am I reading this wrong? Its hard for me not to see this as a diversion of tax dollars to the RGA! Maybe technically its not, but the timing and the circumstances just seem beyond the pale. Tell me if anybody here on DU thinks this is OK. Its bad enough they paid these guys a million in public funds for that "report". If any of us tried this I've got to believe the U.S. Attorney would be knocking on our doors the next morning. Maybe its just my septic system overflowing but something stinks here.

(273 posts)it was like a tip for helping them out. give us a million, wink wink, the report will be just what you need, wink wink, and we'll give you 10,000 back for the governor's association, wink wink. this is how the mob works for christ's sake. Meanwhile I drove to work today on a road with pot holes big enough to swallow a car. No money to fix them but we've got a million for this little transaction.
