Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin (R) signed a bill Monday prohibiting cities across the state from establishing mandatory minimum wage and employee benefits, including vacation or sick leave days.
Advocates of the new law contend that efforts to increase the minimum wage across various municipalities could potentially harm local business communities.
"This bill provides a level playing field for all municipalities in Oklahoma," state Rep. Randy Grau (R), a backer of the bills House version, said on Monday, according to the Associated Press. "An artificial raise in the minimum wage could derail local economies in a matter of months. This is a fair measure for consumers, workers and small business owners."
Opponents of the measure view the move by Oklahoma Republicans as retaliation against an initiative underway in Oklahoma City, where organizers have been gathering signatures to raise the citys minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.10, in line with President Barack Obama's federal minimum wage proposal.
The petition, filed by the Central Oklahoma Labor Federation and attorney David Slane, would need to collect 80,000 signatures to reach a statewide vote.
Slane called the measure disappointing, criticizing the state legislature for stripping "the right of the people to decide minimum wage."
Fallin defended her support for banning a minimum wage hike as an effort to protect consumers in a press release Monday, noting that "most minimum-wage workers are young, single people working part-time or entry-level jobs."

(16,846 posts)Is this law unique to Oklahoma? Cities all over the country are raising their minimum wages above the federal required minimum, and I haven't heard about any other state that's stopping it. Now we'll see more red states enacting these laws. I don't see why state governments should be able to do this. Local areas should be able to set their own rates as long as they're at least the required amount. We're going to have to see a change in the federal minimum if we're going to see American workers get some relief so they're able to afford the necessities of living.

(24,461 posts)Is this situation the fault of the government for trying to make things an atom speck fairer for severely underpaid workers or is this situation the fault of said short-term/short-sighted small businessperson for being under the mistaken notion that the ridiculously low 7.25 an hour insult would remain in place for eternity?
Is the small business owner under the notion that workers in 2014 are paid too much? Fact after chart after graph after study proves that idea dead freaking wrong, and if you have workers with no disposable income, there will be no DEMAND.
I'm just failing to see how taking money OUT of the hands of people who have to spend every dime rather than, at the very least, properly correcting their insulting wages for inflation, creates demand.
That's not "Economics 101", that's Common Freaking Sense.

Because, you know, that average workers getting paid TOO MUCH is and getting too generous benefits are our country's biggest problems.........

(22,666 posts)WRONG.
Many if not most are in their 20s, 30s or older WITH KIDS. They work full time, sometimes 2-3 jobs - trying to make ends meet. And many still end up needing public assistance ie: food stamps. And many/most food stamp recipients are WHITE and NOT kids or teens.
So what this jackass has built her cruel bill on is a FALSE PREMISE.
And I assure you she KNOWS it. She just doesn't care.
What these Republicans would ADORE is a return to slavery. That's IMO what they're advocating when they advocate for abolishment of the min. wage.

(28,784 posts)Women hold the majority of minimum wage jobs in this nation - and minority women are over represented in this group of women.
What sort of asshole tries to make it harder for women to survive in this nation?
The asshole of Oklahoma, apparently.
Any woman who would vote for this women doesn't give a shit about women's best interests.
