(9,070 posts)and it was popular in the neighborhood and at my HS. I always wanted a Mustang so I finished college and just before I got married I bought a Mustang II with straight drive, T-top, 8 track, and spook wheels. It was so cool (at the time). Mine was red. We drove it on my honeymoon. I was so worried that it would get decorated for the wedding that I hid it, and the best man took an hour to find it for our getaway while everyone stood around.
Great memories of interesting times!

(3,557 posts)There is something about a 1988 GT convertible (red of course) just screams "white trash" to me that I can't resist. If I had a decent disposable income, I'd have one of those in a heartbeat.

I see - sorry about the wrong year - But I still want one
But sadly Im afraid I have not the money for it - and I suspect it would be somewhat more easy to have a never - more efffective car than this in the parking lot to.. But a man can allways dream ?

(28,762 posts)buying a new one. Dad had it for about a month and took it back to the Ford dealership and traded it it in for a 1964 Ford Fairlane 4 door. He didn't like the Mustang because it only had 2 doors and he kept bumping his head getting in and out.

Cool - nice I guess - for your children that is - for your dad it might had been somewhat painfully - bumping his head going out and in all the time.. I was not born in 1964 - in fact my mother was a young girl back then - she was born late in the 1950s - but I doubt my grandfather had a Mustang - I suspect he never got a driver license either - even as i he was in the army from he was old enough to get in - to he retired in the mid 1980s.. But he was driving a moped some times I do rembember....

Last week I saw a new Mustang parked outside a local shop and it brought back memories...

(53,339 posts)It was a burgundy convertible. It looked small for a Mustang--but damn, it looked good!
I'm thinking about getting a new car. I'm frugal and tend to go economy, like an Escort. But too many cross-country trips on those flimsy seats have convinced me that I need to move up. The Mustang is pricey for me, but I'm not ruling it out...
One reason guys in Vietnam fantasized about new cars was that the military's Soldiers Deposit program allowed us to bank our pay at 10% interest (and if you were wounded, that rate continued as long as you were hospitalized).
So if you were single and did your time out in the field where you weren't spending your pay, you could come home with enough of a bankroll to buy a new car.
In my case, I was able to plunk down $6100 cash for a brand new '70 E-Type Jaguar convertible roadster.

(53,339 posts)I'd nearly died in the war and a lot of friends had died there, and I didn't expect to live very long, so I splurged.
Later I got into hippie vans (plus a beater for driving to and from work) and then economy cars like my Escorts.
My current Escort is 14 years old, so I think I'm ready for something new.
What do you think--should I go for a phallic symbol that will shout how sexy and desirable I am?

(22,308 posts)and had use of it (my parent's 2nd car) for a good part of my later teen years.
I also owned the same car, in a different color, later in life as well as a '90 later still.
It is a little like your first love. A formative event in your life. Some small part of who I am is different because I was driving around in a '73 Mustang when I was 16-17 years old.
I own 2 Fords even now. Not that I have not owned a multitude of other makes of vehicles along the way, I have. I can't justify a pony car at my age. It would just be a toy. I sure would love one though.
Thanks for posting this. It was a nice addition to my morning.

(23,340 posts)There were some corrosion problems.
I bought it to drive me to and from a summer job in a steel mill during the summer break from college.
It lasted me a couple of years before it was towed away for unpaid parking tickets. By then the trunk had rusted out from the bottom, I had another car lined up, the Mustang would not pass inspection anywhere ... they did me a favor.
It was a great driving car. Anytime something broke, it cost about $10 to get it fixed, as parts were plentiful and cheap. I drove hundreds of miles on a dead battery by parking the car on a slight incline, allowing it to roll forward, or backward, when I needed to start it up again, and popping it into gear. The car would start right up.
