“You’re leaving? Are you effing kidding?” An anti-gay bigot gets humiliated

Peter LaBarbera came to my college to "expose" the "gay agenda." He wasn't expecting what would happen instead

KATE GEISELMAN

When Peter LaBarbera saw that close to a hundred people had assembled at my college to hear his warning about “the gay agenda,” I’m sure he was thrilled. He is the president of a group called Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, which describes its mission as being “dedicated to exposing the homosexual-bisexual-transgender activist agendas.”

When, less than 10 minutes later, he was left with an audience of about a dozen, he was angry. Angry enough to say, as the masses marched out, “You’re leaving? Are you effing kidding?” Angry enough to tweet, later that evening, “Two liberal professors lead their students in a walkout of my talk … rather than allow them to hear an opposing viewpoint.”

Except that’s not exactly what happened. What happened was much bigger than that, but I should back up a bit.

This is not the first time a speaker has come to the campus of Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio, at the invitation of the Traditional Values Club, an organization whose stated mission is “to promote the sanctity of all human life, from birth to natural death; chastity before marriage; marriage exclusively between one man and one woman; as well as the belief that pornography, adultery, and masturbation are immoral, and that everyone is entitled to freedom of speech and religion.”

A couple of years ago, they invited a guest speaker with spurious credentials to explain to students that homosexuality can be cured. These organizations cloak their hate speech with phrases like “Religious Freedom” and pretend to want a dialogue, but we all know better. They stick to their talking points, cite junk science, and name-drop God at every opportunity. Dialogue it is not.

After this incident, he went to Canada, got detained by Canadian customs, and was told he couldn't preach his hate in Canada.

He managed to get out of detention with a legal appeal, so as to avoid being deported.

Then he went to a college campus and started bible-thumping there like a street preacher, and got himself arrested.

Here's the video of his arrest.

I get that people feel passionately about different things but I just don't get this. This isn't passion or strong belief. This is obsession. What went on in this guy's life to cause this? Why is THIS his life's work? On one hand I say let him talk. He looks like an idiot and he's just exposing himself as a hopelessly twisted person. On the other, if he recruits one more person to his crazy crusade the virus hes trying to spread continues. I don't know. Free speech can be a messy thing. Especially when its on the fringes.

What difference does it logically make, and what makes this bigot so obsessed with other people's genitals?

Because genitalia is what it comes down to: "I do not share your preference in a partner's genitalia, and therefore think your 'lifestyle' is an abomination. Also, I spend way too much time obsessing about other people's junk."

I cannot begin to imagine the mindset required to believe the prior sentence.

And as far as I can tell never spoke one single word against homosexuality. I just don't understand how people get so righteous about how others choose to have sex yet ignore Jesus' teachings about helping the poor, healing the sick, etc. etc. etc.

That was straight from the article. It was such a quotable line I had to post it. But I forgot quotation marks. I'm not usually posting at 6:something in the morning. I'll go fix it now.

And the freedom of non-Christians to refuse to pay taxes to support public displays of religion, like, oh, I don't know, creches and Christmas trees on public property?

I suspect he believes in neo theo Christian supremacy a hell of a lot more than he believes in religious freedom or equal rights--or even the words of Christ, as they appear in the Bible.
