I preface this with a little backround story. I attended college from Sept 1986 until June 1990. During that time our campus gay group, like many, met in secret. My first term at school my roommate, who was pledging a frat, accidently crashed the meeting of the campus gay group which I luckily hadn't attended. In short, I came close to being outed the first months of college. Because of that incident it was quite some time before I decided to join that group. Later, I did wind up coming out after a nasty break up. One of the things I thought of when I was going through that break up and the forced to come out that came with it, was suicide. Clearly, I didn't do that. But it was a scary time and frankly not pleasant.
Laura Ingraham was a college senior in 1987 at Dartmouth College and ran a paper called the Dartmouth Review. While editor she sent a reporter to the Dartmouth gay group who recorded a meeting, printed the transcript, and outed the entire club. She also, for good measure, sent tapes of the meeting to the parents of the people in the group. Let me repeat that, she sent tapes of the meeting to the parents of the members. To this day she hasn't apologized for that conduct though she has altered her view on gay rights. Let me be blunt here, she was the original Ravi (the guy who taped Clementi). She doesn't deserve a post on the Sunday shows. She is a woman whose very presence is an affront to decency. In a sane world, she would carry as much weight as any other hate filled bag of poo. Instead, she is literally being invited into our homes for Sunday breakfast. Count me out, I am on a diet anyway.

(34,589 posts)People were pretty open about being gay when we were there, so outing others wouldn't have caused much mayhem, but she did help wreck a shanty town set up to protest the school's South African investments, and do other garbage.
Bad people, Laura and Ann!

(34,589 posts)Cool.
Wait: Devo recorded their first record in your basement!!!
You absolutely must tell me more or I will get my friend who used to work for the NSA to track you down and I will pay a visit. And I don't shower, so it will suck for you.
I *love* Devo, and I *love* Brian Eno who (IIRC) produced much of their stuff.

(57,097 posts)including a synthesizer and a vibraphone as classes ended one winter at Kent State. Some of the members lived in a house in Akron rented by the drummer of Chi Pig. They started off doing some sort of beebop jazz but with no horns.
I lived in a big brick house with some of the members of Tin Huey/Waitresses and we had a an eight track and a sixteen track studio called "Bushflow Studios". Others who recorded there Hammer Damage, Rubber City Rebels, Chi Pig, Waitresses, Tin Huey, Peter Loffner.
I have the lyrics to "Mongoloid" tattooed on my brain.
We've lost two Devos already - Jerry Casale and Alan Myers (both really nice people - especially Alan.
The Black Keys are the sons of one of the Tin Hueys and a member of another band who was also in the Arkon Bushflow nexus.
Some good bands there and one of the Hueys/Waitresses/Numbers band owns Jeffrey Dahmer's childhood home.
Got lots of stories. Got some time to spare?

(34,589 posts)I'm just totally blown away to be trading posts with a closeup witness to the birth of Devo. Did you hang out with them?
I was at one of their concerts in NYC, probably 1980 plus or minus a year or two. I still listen to their work regularly. The lyrics to "Mongoloid" *are* memorable - in fact they seem to address my life...
So here's what I'd love to know, if you have a few moments:
- How much of their persona was them being them, vs. being staged to entertain their audience? I've always wondered about that.
- Were hallucinogenic substances involved?
- Was it quickly obvious that they were going to make the big time? Or did it require lots of work and polish?
Thanks!

(57,097 posts)I knew Richie Roberts the drummer for Chi Pig through his brothers in school. Richie went to school with Devo. It seemed like all the musicians came from Buchtel or Firestone. The Mothersbaughs parents owned some rental property we all rented at one time or another.
- How much of their persona was them being them, vs. being staged to entertain their audience? I've always wondered about that.
There was always a concept that was adhered to. Their sets were highly planned and rehearsed. I remember seeing Gen Baby in a crib at the Crypt on E. Market in Akron. They were serious about it.
It started as an art project. They were/are smart kind of introverted and thoughtful.
- Were hallucinogenic substances involved? Not specifically or as a part of the scene.
- Was it quickly obvious that they were going to make the big time? Or did it require lots of work and polish? Not so obviously. There were a ton of bands around:
I saw Chrissie Hynde when she was in the We Girls. '69 or '70.

(34,589 posts)I'm familiar with The Waitresses from way back. My wife and I met in college in the 80s, we had a mobile DJing company that did frat parties mostly, that song got a lot of play.
Had not heard Chi Pig or Tin Huey before. Really good, can definitely hear substantial overlap with Devo. I just broke out my "good" headphones, I'll be doing some more listening.
That must have been a fine time and place.
I came of age in the New York City area. Lots of great bands, but most were imports, and I never did get to see any of them at their start although I caught a few before they made it really big, most notably The Talking Heads. When I saw Devo I did notice that they stuck very tightly to the script i.e. there was really no spontaneity, but they were still really good.
Wow. Thanks!

(81,298 posts)All the things he's doing now, he was actively inspired to do from his time working with Gerry Casale. Gerry was the ORIGINAL bass player for DEVO. When he started working on a "kids' version" of his own legendary band, he chose my kid as the new DEVO's bass player. Which just gives me the biggest thrill!!!

(52,162 posts)and thanks, it was a tough time, some of it self inflicted as I made some really bad choices in regards to that relationship, but I made it through as I hope all her victims did. One is on the record as having contemplated suicide.

(45,251 posts)most gays were still closeted? As a college freshmen or sophomore, what had your mentoring and role models for wise choices in gay relationships been? Hell, look how many relationship role models, books, talk shows, etc. are devoted to heterosexual relationships and look how many bad choices are made by young heterosexuals!
I am all in favor of people taking responsibility, but I think you should give yourself a pass on that one. While you are at it, pat yourself on the back for learning from that experience and doing better thereafter. Some people just go from one bad relationship to another.
I think you should be very proud of everything, including having survived.
The big mistake I made at that time was dating a married man (I didn't know upon the start but found out in the middle and didn't break it off). It is true we had no role models back then and thus made bad mistakes. His MO was to target young new gays and have affairs and since we were so isolated from each other back then none of us compared notes. I just happened to be the one who was dating him when his wife finally got tired of him.

(45,251 posts)Ending a marriage is not usually an easy decision, especially if children are involved. The era in which she must have grown up was not all that easy on women, either, and not many of them could "closet" the fact that they were not straight men. I think some of the biggest winners of equal rights, when we all finally get them, will be the women gay man will no longer marry so they don't raise suspicion about being gay.
"Dating" a married man is something many hetero women have done, too--and we had more options for "dates" than you did.
Reminds me of a conversation a female friend had with her out, gay male hairdresser at about the time that you were going through your trauma:
She: "I am ashamed to admit that I dated a married man."
He" "Oh who hasn't?"
In his case, he dated the guy before and after the wedding--even gave him a wedding present and stood outside the church. I can't even imagine that kind of pain.
Again, just congratulate yourself on your survival at that young age and your wisdom. And on getting out of that relationship because something inside you knew you deserved better, no matter what society was saying then.

what is really going on with her (she has adopted three children from Russia on her own). Freud couldn't even break through her mess. She has an exceptional amount of vitriol and hate for the gay community as demonstrated by her repeated attacks on gay people (her "new" focus is the "danger" of gay adoption). Her totally inexcusable, eccentric, wildly vitriolic behavior in college suggests that she has some very serious psychological problems. Honestly she should have been punished (ideally expelled) for violating the privacy rights of a fellow group of students in such a flagrant manner. How does that not violate the basic university honor code? Mailing tapes to parents? She was "shaming" and "punishing" other students about whom she knew nothing (what if outing one of these students in such an extreme manner put that student in danger?)

(13,589 posts)approved of anything like that. Especially sending anything to their parents. That shows a level of nastiness that probably isn't possible to grow or learn out of. She has probably been forced to say she has altered her views on gay rights publicly. I wouldn't believe what she says these days.
In 1987 I was probably a lot like a racist that brags about some of his best friends being black. I knew a couple of gay men and was cool around them but didn't "get it" yet.

(3,944 posts)I also didn't get it back in my college years (also the late 80's). I used the word "fag" a lot, without really understanding the damage I probably caused to others that might have been closeted. I still feel pangs of guilt thinking about it.
I'd like to think I've come a long way since then. I tend to be the first to speak out if I hear someone make a bigoted or racist comment. I also proudly express my support for marriage equality, not just here but in public as well.

(45,251 posts)It still is. Even supposedly leftist people will revert to it when it seems socially acceptable to them.
You can see it in a lot of posts on this board, even some on this thread. Not the word "fag," per se, but a certain attitude.
Also, I love Jon Stewart. Don't miss a show. If I do, I catch up online or On Demand, if I possibly can. Think he's probably one of the smartest and funniest people on the planet. But he never mentions Senator Graham without also doing an over the top impression of a Southern woman.
Graham's alleged resemblance to a woman or his alleged orientation is not what makes--or should make--Graham an object of political satire. But, it's supposed to be not only okay but funny because....well, I don't know why. In my eyes, it's an offense to both gay males and women.

But in the '90s there was this phenomenon when the Spooks and their poltergeists were "converting to Catholicism" (Opus Dei?), Spooks and FBI agents and Robert NOVAKula and this INGRAHAM.
So when she converted, I sat back a bit and waited to see what her post conversion spirituality would be like, whether she would eliminate the vileness from her expression, any remorse, any Christlike goodness shining through? Nothing!1 I sent an e-mail to The Little Sisters of the Poor asking how spirituality is supposed to present in a convert like her, and a Mother Superior answered that she needed more information on who this was since she had never heard of her. I sent it.

He hung with Ingraham and what you know is only half the story. One time when her boyfriend was breaking up with her, Ingraham pulled a gun on the guy and held him hostage until Brock talked her down.
