BOSTON Kayvon Eson may have had art on the brain. But the Boston Police Department had public safety on its mind when it promptly arrested the self-described performance artist, who's accused of leaving a hoax bomb near the site of the Boston Marathon finish line on the first anniversary of the bombings that killed three and injured dozens more.
Edson has been identified in multiple news reports as the man who repeatedly shouted "Boston Strong" as he dumped a backpack containing a rice cooker near the finish line on Tuesday, an otherwise solemn day of remembrance for victims of the deadly attack on April 15, 2013.
Edson was stopped by authorities around 7 p.m. after a police officer saw him acting suspiciously, including wearing a black robe and black hat and veil as he walked down the middle of a street barefoot in the pouring rain.
Edson dropped the backpack and told the officer it contained a rice cooker, according to police officials. He was charged with disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and possession of a hoax device. It's unclear when he might be arraigned on the charges.

(135,425 posts)It's a bit of a trifecta with him. Here he is in happier times explaining his "vision" - for whatever that is worth:
He's also a lawbreaker with this bit of grandstanding. Time will tell if he was just being "outrageous" or if he was noncompliant with his medication schedule.
If the former, they need to toss the book at him. No "aww, gee, but" in mitigation.
That just wasn't funny, it didn't have a point, it mocked the seriousness of the day and -- perhaps the worst crime of all -- it was blatantly obvious and amateurish. There was very little "performance" and even less "art" in his halfassed stunt--those nitwits from the Fred Phelps school of Assholishness have more verve in their presentation than this tool managed. I've seen more subtlety in the TPing of homes by junior high school students.

Then I checked out his Facebook page:

...and in his videos, he makes mention of trips to McLean Hospital in Belmont, one of the foremost mental institutions in America.
I think the Artist had a manic episode. He won't be going to jail. He'll be going back to the hospital. McLean = pretty serious issues.
It's pretty clear from his Facebook page alone that he is not well, which sucks for him twofold: he's sick, and later on, when he regains control of himself, he is going to regret this for the rest of his life.
I'm not usually one to preach pity for someone making Marathon bombing jokes, especially when it's this extreme. In this case however, I recommend not taking his actions too much to heart. He's pretty clearly not well.

My guess after some consideration: the run-up to the anniversary was profoundly emotional for everyone in that city. I think this kid spent all day listening to the church bells chiming mournfully, the bagpipes playing on Boylston, the rain of tears in the TV coverage, and lost it. Had a bad bipolar manic episode. Better people than this kid cracked yesterday. Combine that with his condition, and you get this. Just a guess, but I think I'm pretty close to the mark.
