More Teachers Need To Show Students How Dangerous White Supremacists AreIn 2012, Missouri State University professor David Embree invited Frazier Glenn Miller to speak to his class so they would know how dangerous white supremacists really are. Miller, who was charged yesterday with killing three people at Jewish sites in Kansas this weekend, told the class that he hoped the next Hitler was sitting in the room.
The classroom lecture had the desired effect. Students were convinced that white supremacy is a real thing and a dangerous thing, Embree added.
I asked the class, I said, What did you think about bringing these people in? Embree explained to BuzzFeed. And they said, Youre absolutely right, if we had not heard these people we wouldnt believe such hateful people exist.
Miller helpfully underlined the lesson by insulting perceived Jews among the student body. We suggest that this experiment requires emulation, and that the time has come for courageous education professionals to follow Dr. Embrees model and educate their students. Hate like Millers may be ugly, but if we never countenance it we can never truly appreciate the dangerous banality of evil that Hitler and his latter-day fanatics embody.

(30,252 posts)Actors who aren't afraid to skim through The Turner Diaries and approximate the ugliness within to educate these kids about how ugly it really is.
...because the kids would inevitably find out they're actors, assuming they weren't simply told up front. and then it's just "Oh... they're like that because they're faking to try to 'teach us a lesson'! We get it."
Not quite the message you want this to be sending. Far, far, far more effective when they realize the raving lunatic in front of them is for real and serious.

(8,577 posts)Although I understand the desire to keep people like this away from our young, there's no actor good enough to replicate the hatred and evil that emanates from them when they're talking about these issues. They're truly frightening and repellant.

(12,504 posts)Not every kid will go to college and Juniors/Seniors are well equipt to relate to the world around them...most of them at that age have been exposed to Hitlers ethnic cleansing films and for them to see things alive and kicking in this day and age would be an eye opener.

(9,350 posts)Also, if it came out that actors were used, right wingers, like those on Fox News, would claim liberal colleges were trying force students into having a left leaning view. They would most likely go on to say that the fact that actors had to be used, proved white supremacy was no longer a big problem in that a real white supremacist could not be found to speak to the class.

(3,174 posts)How much scorn have we heaped on FOX, CBS and other "news" organizations who have faked their reports. If you fake a lesson like this, it would be worse than useless. However, odious, the haters have a right to their free speech and the students have a right to hear them. The students ALSO have a right to hear opposing viewpoints.
The truth is far more powerful, and the lies far more dangerous, especially to teens, than most people realize.

(999 posts)These people should be allowed to speak in these settings because we need to hear the hate from them directly. An actor cannot convey the fanatic beliefs of these people. To his dying breath Timothy McVeigh felt that what he did was just and that the children were just collateral damage to his cause. I am listening to Ed Schultz talk about the Bundy guy in Nevada and he has the same mindset, He is anti government and is itching for a confrontation. Unfortunately this is the downside of having a free society that allows these groups to proliferate under the guise of free speech and free association. I support both but where is the line and what justifies crossing it.

Men like Miller were abused and never allowed to formulate their own opinions. The grew up in an atmosphere of hatred that they carry with them. The truth does set people free. The way to create citizens with open minds is to allow as much light to shine on every aspect of human nature.

(66,380 posts)The instructor brought in a guest who was a member of the John Birch Society. (This was back in the late 80's.)
The guy was dressed in a nice suit and tie. Spoke calmly. No wild-eyed crazy-face. Nothing like that.
And he spoke the most ludicrous, deluded, God-awful things. The whole class just about had our lower jaws on the floor. We couldn't believe this guy actually believed his 'Commies-are-everywhere' madness.
It was quite eye-opening.

Otherwise there is a tendency to minimize racism when it comes from friends\family who are otherwise nice and basically ordinary. They are the ones who allow the most hateful to exist by making them feel comfortable.
