Brother, 4, shoots 2-year-old after finding gun

Brother, 4, shoots 2-year-old after finding gun
Published 9:31 am, Wednesday, April 16, 2014

COCHRANTON, Pa. (AP) — A 2-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the face by his 4-year-old brother who found a loaded gun in their northwestern Pennsylvania home while their mother slept.

...

Sgt. Mark Zaleski says the victim was shot in the face, beneath his right eye, when his brother accidentally fired the .380-caliber Ruger pistol.

Police haven't said who owns the gun or who might be criminally responsible for it falling into the boy's possession.

Zaleski says the boy's mother was napping at the time. Another 1-year-old child was also in the house.

The High Church of Redemptive Violence is considered by some a cruel and capricious religion. But we are assured daily by its fervent acolytes that the deaths are all worth it to stave off unrelenting Evil, which would be even worse, even more heinous, even more unspeakable an atrocity than a 4-year-old shooting and killing his 2-year-old brother.

All hail the Rifle, the Gun and the Holy Missile. They Keep Us Safe and Free. Kind of.

And who was watching the children while mother slept during the middle of the day? Was she sleeping something off, like this babysitter who claims to have slept through the sound of a five-year-old killing himself with a gun she left on a table? And unless she rented to a tenant, how could she not know that there was a loaded gun on the premises within the reach of a two-year-old?

...(T)he victim was shot...when his brother accidentally fired the .380-caliber Ruger pistol.

Well, it's nowhere near as big as the 8-inch .357 that ANOTHER two-year-old fatally shot a sibling with...

What other reason is there to leave a weapon in reach of a 4-year-old, than your desire for the little tyke to off his kid brother?

We need to treat such crimes as the acts they are: Murder by proxy.

There will always be one-at-a-time deaths from stupidity. Whether it be guns or something else. I had a neighbor who took his six-year-old daughter for a ride on the back of his little totegoat...down a county road, and she fell off and her head hit the pavement...her brain separated and she died the same day, in the hospital. I was in the first car on the scene and I'll never forget it. People will always do stupid things, and guns just make it a hell of a lot easier.

But...if Newtown did not shake up this country enough to do something about our absurd gun culture and laws, then nothing ever will.

We are doomed...until we do something to change the kind of government we have.

...(T)he children were outside...when the 5-year-old asked his mom if he could get his toy gun out of the trunk of her boyfriend’s car. The(y)...didn’t realize the boyfriend kept a loaded gun in the trunk, and...the boy...accidentally pulled the trigger.

The bullet went through the trunk. and its fragments struck the girl in the chest and another boy in the arm...(T)his was a preventable accident and could have been stopped by using a gun lock or supervising the boy when he went through the trunk.
(link)

I would double-check that trigger for the boy's fingerprints -- did the trunk just happened to be unlocked, and if not, how did he get in? Either way, you go (to jail), boyfriend!

That would create the criminal liability in cases like this (and be an accessory crime that if their home is searched for other reasons and they're found in violation could be chargeable then) without creating a mandate to invade people's homes and confirm that their guns are locked up.
