Congressional Republicans are winning at Twitter in 2014

Your congressman is almost certainly on Twitter. Your senator definitely is. But how are they using the social network? Are Democrats more active than Republicans, or vice-versa? Who has the most followers on the Hill? I recently scraped together summary Twitter data - follower count, following count, and number of tweets - for every member of Congress. Some of the more interesting findings are below. Keep in mind that simple counts are a blunt instrument for measuring activity on Twitter, and moreover that follower counts in particular should be treated with a certain amount of skepticism -- a 2012 study found that nearly 40 percent of congressional twitter account followers were either inactive or from bots.

But still, the summary statistics are useful for comparing Twitter activity between congressmen, and between the parties as a whole. And there's a lot more at stake here than simple bragging rights.

1. Republicans have more followers than Democrats

The median Republican House member has 6,872 Twitter followers, while the median Democrat has 6,015, a difference of about 13 percent. Republican Senators enjoy an even wider advantage - 23,252 followers versus 19,429 for Democrats, a gap of 17.9 percent. Considering that Democrats hold a technological advantage over Republicans in many realms, these gaps are fairly surprising.

2.Republicans also follow more people on Twitter.............

3.House Republicans tweet more than House Democrats, but Senate Democrats tweet the most.................

4. Seven of the top 10 most-followed legislators are Republicans.......

3. Hate tweets far out number substantive tweets. And it's easier to tweet a lie in 120 characters

I am fairly techie but why do I want to get updates that are limited to only 140 characters. Furthermore I see more people apologizing for something they said stupidly on twitter over actually providing me with any useful information.

You can link to articles or posts on Democratic Underground- for instance! or anything else. You can also post memes with hundreds of characters or words.

11. Depends on how you use it. It is my favorite tool (and a note on the article)

I follow a lot of news sources so get breaking news from all over quickly. Local stations to big news outlets.

I follow a few celebrities that I enjoy and have had some good discussions with them - from Lauren Holley to JarPad (Sam Winchester from Supernatural - who blew up last night over an incident at the airport ). William Shatner is a treat to follow and spends a lot of time replying to people.

As to the article - I have a twitter list of politics. I follow a lot of republicans to see the stupid things they say. I also get in some digs that their followers will see. I like breaking things up into lists and having a tab open for each (less chatter than all on one feed). So the numbers for republicans might be higher but that doesn't really mean much

I also tweet out news and am followed by some news orgs (good day la, local news agency, etc) and I can talk directly to reporters on stories and get feedback.

And if you are a fan of something it can be a lot of fun. Star Wars and Supernatural stuff. I follow the writers of Supernatural and have gotten some interesting insights into the show - and a lot of times the actors live tweet during episodes and give you a lot of interesting insight into certain scenes (and Shatner has started doing this with Supernatural as well as he likes the show and has a lot of fun with Misha Collins. He is competing against him in gishwhes this year and taunts him without mercy....)

The state department and other departments regularly have Q&A sessions as they did this morning. Great way to get some questions asked/answered that you would probably never have the chance to otherwise.

Just not enough characters to make a complete thought.. all you do with any kind of accuracy is grunt yeah or nay.. with no looking between the lines.. I can understand how Republicans or the right wing partisans..outnumber Democrats and liberals.. theirs is a much more black and white existence.. given anything longer than a 120 character thought is not their cup of tea..

I don't worry about it.. something around the corner to take its place any moment.. the second you get people my age hooking in to a media.. it does one of two things.. dies because truthfully younger folks understand the internut (yeah I know how I spelled it better.. or two we take it over and start trading recipes.. just a fact of life

wait wait.. there is the possibility of a third way (that should bring Manny in here real quick) LOL.. the partisans will so overtake it...kind of like yahoo comments and what happened to AOL.. that 28 people shifting accounts will make up most of the discourse..
