Police beat up entire wedding party, ruin pro baseball player’s career

GALVESTON, TX — More than a dozen wedding guests were brutalized by police officers during a raid on a wedding party at a hotel. Cops fired tasers, used batons, and generously applied pepper spray to the guests of a bride and groom hours after their wedding. Among them was former pro-baseball star Brandon Backe, who said the shoulder injuries that he received from police caused his pitching career to end.

After causing a gaping head wound, bruises, hair pulled out, a broken nose, and pepper spray on numerous individuals, the only reprimand any of the officers received was a paperwork violation. Interestingly, none of the 3 dozen cops reported any use of force.

An event that should have been happy and memorable turned into violence and chaos when the Galveston Police got involved. A couple had just exchanged their vows and were celebrating with friends and family at the San Luis Hotel.

Everything was fine until an off-duty police officer thought that he had witnessed the bride’s brother, Daniel “Cole” O’Balle, 19, walking outside with an alcoholic beverage in his hand. Suspecting an under-aged adult had consumed a beverage without government permission, and violated the “open container” prohibition law, he phoned the police department for backup.

And yes, completely believable. Similar scenes are played out all over the country. Police departments are now militarized and overreact without consequence against innocent citizens.

Police officers disciplined over wedding brawl

Nine officers will be suspended, with the lengths of time ranging from two to seven days, and four will receive written reprimands in connection with the October 5 disturbance.

The disciplinary actions stem from the violation of Galveston police administrative procedures, which stymied investigators trying to determine whether rules about the use of force had been violated.

Speaking of ships sailing and seeing the hidden brick wall at the back of the theater that you never suspected existed sounds a lot like the end of the movie, The Truman Show. I like both the quote and the movie.

When you hire more cops they have an institutional interest in meddling in everything, sticking their nose into places where it doesn't need to be. In other words, they need to justify their jobs.

And this is why it will keep getting worse:

For all the brutality and wanton attacks committed that night, no officers were fired. As far as the chief was concerned, every instance of force was justified. The only complaints that Galveston Police supervisors had was that the incident wasn’t documented properly.

No such thing as an 'off-duty' cop,. well, maybe when they are sleeping, but they are probably dream policing.

But hey man, if they dont crack some skulls over some suspected drinking, they,.. whats the line, oh yeah, they might not 'make it home to their families'

Astros' Backe one of 10 people arrested in brawl with police October 6, 2008

HOUSTON -- Houston Astros pitcher Brandon Backe was among 10 people arrested during a brawl with police at a weekend wedding reception in a Galveston hotel bar.

The bride's father, 19-year-old brother and a FEMA coordinator were also arrested Sunday at the hotel, a command center for emergency workers after Hurricane Ike went through Galveston Island on Sept. 13.

Police spokesman Capt. Walter Braun said an internal affairs investigation has been launched.

The 30-year-old Backe, a member of the wedding party, ignored police orders to back away from the fight, and struggled with officers who attempted to handcuff him, according to police reports.

regardless, still a pretty ugly story. I wonder why militias weren't there to protect them from this government oppression?

40. It's news now because his lawsuit against the cops came to trial this month
Tue Apr 22, 2014, 08:35 AM
Apr 2014

He and eleven other victims sued several Galveston cops in federal court.

Backe testified that he heard a cry referring to Cole O'Balle, the suspected underage drinker (and the brother of the bride):

Backe said he ran to the sound and encountered O'Balle face down on the ground and surrounded by police, his face bloody and the prongs from a stun gun stuck in his back. O'Balle was flown by helicopter to a Houston hospital.

Backe said officer Nicholas McDermott "screamed, 'back the f--- up." Backe said he could back up no farther and told the officer, "Chill out, we can't back up. You've got enough room." At that point several officers attacked him, he said, striking him as he fell to the ground and continuing to beat him until his face was bloody. One kicked him in the face, he said.

When he fell, his shoulder struck a concrete curb that separated the sidewalk from a garden. He said officers kept beating him while he was down. "I hit the ground hard and they just got on top of me," he said. Backe contends that this is when he his shoulder was so badly damaged it ended his career.

Judge Kenneth M. Hoyt, in an order filed March 29, granted the defendant’s motion to dismiss part of the lawsuit pertaining to 18 city employees in their official capacities.

Hoyt refused, however, to dismiss the entire lawsuit and allowed claims against the city to continue. The plaintiffs’ claims against the city employees were duplicative of the claims asserted directly against the city, the dismissal order states.
