Hello DUers,
Sometimes I find that it is both fun and necessary to respond to some the conservative ideologues out there. The latest one that I found is a site called http://marcuslockardonline.blogspot.com/ . I would love to get some feedback from you as to responding to this particular meme:
This should be fun since it is a picture of Hong Kong.
Thanks!

(48,121 posts)Are they saying capitalism doesn't redistribute things??? What?
Capitalism redistributes wealth it just allows for fewer people to have wealth. It puts the how and how much into redistribution where a few control everything (like Saudi Princes and fox news and such).
The right believes (stupidly, I will debate them any time on this) that every single human can be rich. Ok...how does that work? If I have a million dollars and you do as well and I only offer you ten bucks to clean my pool...are you going to do it? Nope. Will you work on a farm and pick food for me for a dollar? No, you will not.
Capitalism relies on people being uneducated and working against their personal needs. It needs people to believe that they can all be super rich if they work hard enough and spend their whole lives slaving away.
So yes! It works. For the few.
Imagine a world where people work together for each other. Now imagine something like open source software/freeware where, instead of paying hundreds of dollars you earn for something, you get something similar for free. And you could use that software to help yourself and others. It exists. Why? Because people want to share information and knowledge to help all while others want to use that information and knowledge to profit.
Imagine a world where science, inventions, medicine comes from the masses for the masses. We would all be 'rich'. Capitalism wants to reward the few for the few. Being socialist means wanting us all to benefit, empowering us all, and working together to ensure we all have the best and the most.
The right believes we only want to work for ourselves and cash - because that it what they want. All the while the rest of the population is looking at them like they are nuts.

(36,827 posts)In rudimentary form capitalism existed 4000 years ago, but it basically just consisted of the exchange of currency for goods and it didn't build anything. There were a lot of other -isms that built this world before the emergence of modern capitalism.

You'll probably drive them nuts with that alone. Then ask him how he's enjoying the weekend, courtesy of the evil slavery-pushing labor movement.

(2,529 posts)Tell them to do some googling. Capitalism started in the Middle Ages in Europe. Before that, people in the ancient world didn't have banks and didn't invest capital in business. The banks they did have were involved in collecting taxes and religious tithes, not in investment capital or were privately owned by the monarchy. The only form of capitalism that predated European capitalism is merchant capitalism in the 9th century by those evil terra-rist Muslims.
