manning armed checkpoints and stopping vehicles? Saw something on FB about it, but haven't seen it confirmed anywhere else. Just curious.
If true, it would certainly be an escalation. Getting ready for the Burning Man Festival?

(13,081 posts)Because that's his district. A damn fine American, and truly dedicated to he people of Nevada. Every time I start to think "Damn, this place is a shit hole and I really need to move to New York or France," I think about Las Vegans like him.
When he was a county commissioner, he would bend over backwards to give back to the community, especially children. Having taught at several of the "urban" or just plain poor schools in Las Vegas, the guy could be counted on to come and mentor youth. And it clearly wasn't for political purposes, because there's not much to gain from speaking to fourteen year olds in other people's districts.
And, as a congressman, he's stood up for the little guy. He's one of those people representing ALL of his con students, not just the oil tycoons with the deepest pockets.
Ironically, when Cliven Bundy was talking about "driving past the Vegas ghettos and seeing the lazy negros on welfare who are government slaves" (paraphrasing), it was guys like his own fucking Congressman that he was looking at.

But these people are so propagandized that they probably think the government is NOT owned by the Kochs and their ilk.

(36,988 posts)Carol M. Bundy (August 26, 1942 December 9, 2003) was an American serial killer. Bundy and Doug Clark became known as "The Sunset Strip Killers" after being convicted of a series of murders in Los Angeles during the late spring and early summer of 1980. The victims were young prostitutes or runaways.

(95,248 posts)I will simply take my text from old Will Rogers:
"We don't know what we want, but we're ready to bite somebody to get it!"
The goverment collecting normal fees for use of its land is hardly 'overreaching government for our personal lives'.
The usual response to persons ignoring court orders directing payment of a debt is seizure of assets, with possible arrest for contempt. Again, dirt normal, utterly usual, only to be expected, routine behavior....

(17,064 posts)If the State of Nevada owned the land, as Bundy desires, his grazing fees would be 10X higher. Market rate would be about 15X higher. Bundy's grazing fees were heavily discounted by BLM... therefore, anything but normal. The MFer was too stupid to realize what a break he was getting.

(4,015 posts)I think you're confused about the opinion that liberals have about federal control of public lands. It's not really a controversial topic. Liberals tend to scorn freeloading millionaires though.
Public - and therefore federal - ownership of land is not something that socialists really have a problem with generally.
socialist_n_TN
(11,481 posts)However, the current governmental ownership might be problematic simply because this government is owned by the big bourgeoisie and they make decisions based on that.

(4,015 posts)I couldn't agree more with what you wrote. In theory, it's a good idea. In our current corpocracy, it has some rather nasty effects.

(4,015 posts)He seemed to believe that being a socialist somehow puts you in fundamental opposition to the very concept of state.
My guess: He never learned to properly distinguish a socialist from an anarchist. You know how these folks just lump together any labels that they believe to be in disagreement with.
I think something along the lines of "Hey Clem, you need to put these socialist anarchist communist nazis in their place or we'll all end up in FEMA camps" encompasses the totality of the kind of education in political science that he received.

(3,891 posts)The worst thing that could happen is that one is given to them. I know, many here are furious that the Government hasn't already taught them a lesson, and others are waiting gleefully for the Federal Agents to sweep in and teach them a lesson, I am concerned that event may take place.
Not because I want the milita types to succeed. But because I'm afraid that they may be victorious. I mentioned the brewing battle on the border of Texas and Oklahoma in a post a few days ago.
Many people here think they are a bunch of idiots with guns, and certainly some are. Others claim that those with military pensions are just clerks and such that don't know what they are doing, which is certainly true for some. Yet, some of those people do know what they are doing, and some who you think are merely gun toting idiots are probably very experienced in fighting. We've been doing it for more than a decade in two locations, and even the "clerks" have been in the fighting more than the term would indicate.
Oh we have tanks, and helicopters, and guns, and the power of the Federal Government. As I mentioned before. Those things didn't help the Soviets in Afghanistan, and they haven't helped us in Afghanistan either. They didn't win the war in Viet-Nam either.
Sun Tzu would very much object to the idea of using massed troops to try and defeat the militia. That would place them upon what is known as "Death Ground" which means they have no escape and no option except to fight to the death. We've seen plenty of examples in history where that was a very costly choice. The Spartans at Thermopolae. The Texans at the Alamo. When surrender is not an option, and for many of them it is not an option, the costs could be extraordinarily high to defeat them. But as we saw at Thermopylae, the Alamo, Stalingrad, and all the other fights against overwhelming odds, the defeat makes them martyrs. Heros to those who pick up arms next.
General Giap defeated an overwhelming military force in Viet-Nam. The Afghani Rebels defeated an overwhelming military force in Afghanistan, twice. The way to do this is not to classify them as terrorists, because that doesn't work to drive support away, it makes others more supportive, seeing them as freedom fighters. Hamas and the PLO enjoyed support from many people in this nation despite being a "Terrorist" organization. The Irish Republican Army raised millions of dollars in the United States from people who were willing to donate to the "Freedom Fighters" who were classified by the British as Terrorists. Osama and Al Queda still manage to get recruits and supporters despite being killed, and survivors hunted all over the planet.
Treat them as common criminals. No more worthy of praise than a bank robber, or a murderer. Try them and convict them of the crimes they have committed. Don't do something incredibly stupid and give them an Alamo to point to as the rally cry. Ruby Ridge did more to harm the image of the Federal Government than the White Separatist movement. Randy Weaver was acquitted by a jury for the crimes he committed because of the overreaction of the Federal Government. Patience will bring them to you where they can be arrested without risk to anyone.
Let's remember Eric Rudolph shall we? He blew up something like three abortion clinics and the Olympic Park. A massive manhunt ensued, and it went on for years. All the time the pundits are talking about the ineptitude of the Federal Authorities, and the stupidity of those chasing him. So what happened? He was caught dumpster diving behind a grocery store by a cop, taken into custody, and tried for the crimes he had committed. He was treated as a criminal in other words, not a terrorist. He even plea bargained to avoid the death penalty.
