Romney's visit to Wisconsin speaks volumes...

He's going to give a speech in Appleton.

You know who is buried in Appleton, and still revered by many there?
"Tailgunner" Joe McCarthy.

And the John Birch Society is HQ'd in Appleton.

My daughter went there for her undergrad degree.

The town barely acknowledges McCarthy. They are embarrassed. They make a big deal out of native son Houdini and Edna Ferber, who grew up there.

I have heard, but could not verify, would never accuse, certain college students of getting drunk and peeing on McCarthy's grave.

confirm the McCarthy/Houdini sentiment to be true. Although, I work very near the Birchers HQ and that seems well maintained and alive.

Some other conservative (maybe Rush? Don't remember) was bragging about how some of the older people in Appleton still consider McCarthy to be a "martyr" and "hero."
